Hi,
I am a descendant of Josiah Chapin and I do have a copy of "The Chapin Book"
published in 1924 by Gilbert
Warren Chapin. This book doesn't have much biographical information on most members
of the family.
Japhet Chapin
Japhet Chapin was bpt. Oct. 15, 1642 in Roxbury, Mass. and died Feb. 20, 1712 in
Springfield, Mass. He
married [1] July 22, 1664, Abilenah Cooley, daughter of Samuel Cooley of Milford, Conn.
She was born in
1642 and died Nov. 17, 1710 in Springfield. Japhet married [2] Dorothy Root of Enfield,
Conn. on May 31,
1711.
The following brief paragraph about Japhet is included.
"Japhet Chapin probably for time resided in Milford, Conn. John Pyncheon deeded
land in Springfield to
him in 1669. He was engaged in the battle with the Indians at Turners Falls in 1676, and
was a deacon in
the church in Springfield."
Henry Chapin
Henry Chapin was born in England and died Aug. 15, 1718 in Springfield. He married Dec.
15, 1664, Bethia
Cooley, daughter of Benjamin & Sarah Cooley of Longmeadow, who was born Jan. 16, 1644
and died Dec. 11,
1711 in Springfield.
"Henry Chapin at an early age entered on a seafaring life; was impressed on board
a British ship and
served seven years, and was in an engagement with the Dutch; afterwards, he commanded a
merchant ship
sailing between London and Boston. Tired of the sea, he came to Springfield in 1659, and
shared with
Japhet his father's gift of lands in Chicopee. There he built his house."
There is no information about their burials. I think that the information about Henry and
Bethia being
buried in England is wrong. I can't imagine transporting a body across the Atlantic
Ocean aboard a sailing
ship so it could be buried in England.
Clearly, Bethia and Abilenah Cooley were not sisters. I did a search on Rootsweb and
found that Samuel
Cooley and his wife Ann Prudden had seven children, Abilenah being their second child.
The children were
all born in Milford, CT. Benjamin Cooley and his wife Sarah Colton [some say Sarah
Savage] had eight
children, all born in Springfield, Bethia being the eldest. I couldn't verify the
Milford, CT data, but I
was able to verify the Springfield births. They are published in Vol. 18 of the Record of
the NEHGS. The
Springfield records give Bethia's birth date as Sept. 16, 1643, not Jan. 16, 1664.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
I don't have access to the Chapin books, what I do have are the notes that I've
collected from the Chapin
List and other sources. This is what I found in going through them. My husband is a
descendant of Josiah
Chapin and I've been collecting data on the Chapin family for the last few years.
A fairly detailed source with references:
http://www.geneal.net/806.htm
Two Chapin brothers married two Cooley sisters. It does list Benjamin
Cooley as the
father of the two girls and gives the source of that information.
I am confused on the place of burial for Henry however; the rest of the
family is buried
in Massachusetts (when it's listed)
- Henry & Bethia died in Massachusetts and are buried in England?
Another source that list the wife of Roger Chapin (Chapyn)is:
http://www.brumm.com/familytrees/20898.htm
A web site with not so much detail is:

I have nothing beyond Henry Chapin.
Hope this helps,
