Robert E. Chapin, 79, formerly of Girard and Albion, (PA) died Thursday,
January 25, 2007, at St. Vincent Health Center. Robert was born March
27,1927, in Albion, a son of the late Russell J. and Ruth E. Hindman
Chapin III.
He attended the Albion High School and graduated from the Bedford, Ohio
high school in 1945. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S.
Navy, where he served aboard a Destroyer, the USS McCaul in the South
Pacific. Upon his discharge from the military he returned to the Albion
area and worked for 29 years as a Railway Engineer for the Bessemer &
Lake Erie Railroad, retiring in 1975. He was associated with Lake City
Housing in Sales for many years following his retirement. Recently he
had been spending his winters in Punta Gorda, Fla. and lived in Lake
Suzy, Fla., returning to the Girard area in 2005. He was a member of
the Grace United Methodist Church in Albion and enjoyed carpentry work,
remodeling homes, fishing, hunting, football, using his computer,
boating and spending time at his camp near Tidioute and his cottage on
Lake Erie. He was also a member of the Girard American Legion Post
#494, the Albion VFW Post #2341 and a life member of the Albion Moose
Club.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mara Lynn Gray, in 1983; a son,
Russell J. "Butch" Chapin IV, in 1977 and a granddaughter, Michelle Mara
Gray, in 1988. He is survived by his wife Margaret L. Peters Chapin,
whom he married January 30, 1948 in Mayville, N.Y.; a daughter Sandra
Ann Kaufman and her husband George of Deluth, Ga.; a brother Russell J.
Chapin III and his wife Barbara of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren
Shawn E. Gray, George A. Kaufman IV, Christine A. Kaufman, Eric
P.Chapin, Lisa R.Carlson, Marsha L. Stevens, and Kevin S.Chapin;
ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East,
Girard on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be
held there on Tuesday at 10 a.m.with Rev. Franklin Klein officiating.
Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at the Springfield
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater
PA Chapter, NW Regional Office, 110 West 10th St., Suite 212, Erie, PA
16501 or to Albion Public Library, 111 E. Pearl St., Albion, PA 16401.
