I'm doing this in the middle of the night, so can't give you anything but
generalities right now. First, he is important because he was a co-founder of Springfield
Massachusetts, and the famous statue, "The Puritan," was supposedly modeled on
him. Our family went to Devon County England (Paignton) this last summer to
"discover" the Deacon Samuel Chapin roots there. The Parish Church has a special
book for Chapins and a wall plaque giving details about his baptism and marriage there
before he left, as a Dissenter, in 1638 for America. You can easily google him and get a
lot of information, and the library in Springfield has information as well. There is a
Chapin book. There are a fair number of distinguished and famous decendents, and he had
the reputation of an "upstanding" citizen, quite influential in the community.
