Hi Ron, I just have a very few minutes as I have to leave town
suddenly to take care of my Mother ([born] a Chapin) in Florida.
She was taken ill yesterday so all this is rather sudden,
Sorry to hear this - hope she's OK...

Our branch begins with Phillip W. Chapin, born 26 Dec 1828.
Parents unknown. He was left at Canandaigua Poor House in 1833
(records destroyed in a fire) and adopted by Corydon Phelps of
Bristol NY in 1834 for a term of 13 years or until he was 20.
(Census info shows he was not with the Phelps family during his
teen years and I believe he was on board a U.S. Sloop of War called
the Preble. He also fought in the Civil War and was wounded.
He raised a family in the Montezuma area of Cayuga County, NY.
and married Sarah Blauvelt. The man in the Union Springs picture
was Les Chapin, Grandson of this Phillip and Sarah.
The only WC entry I found for Phillip and Sarah is
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=hpetty&id=I1319
How do you connect to them?
Let me know if you are interested in more details...or perhaps you
have some details that might help me sort out Phillip's origins.
(His middle name was Washburn and I've always felt that might be
a large clue...???) If you have a chance I'd love to know your
connection to the family, although I [may] not be able to answer [you]
for a week or two. Another Chapin descendent, Sharon Ross Loysen
The only WC Washburn/Chapin connection I found was
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=hegerich&id=I036984
The dates/places don't look like a match :^(
I am copying the Chapin list in case anybody out there can help.
Good hunting,
Ron
