At the time of the publication of "The Chapin Book" in 1924, not all of the
baptismal records of the children of Samuel Chapin and Cicely Penney had
been found. But a few years later, searches of parishes adjacent ot
Paignton yielded additional information on their children. These results
were published in the NEHGS "Register" in, I believe, the late 1920's.
This is the complete list of their children as I now know them. Note that
the dates given are baptismal dates not birth dates. Their birth dates are
unknown, except for Hannah's.
1. David bap. 4 Jan 1624 Paignton
2. Catherine bap. 1626 Berry Pomeroy
3. Sarah bap. Oct 1628 Berry Pomeroy
4. Samuel bap. Jan 1630 Berry Pomeroy
bur. 10 July 1634 Berry Pomeroy
5. Henry bap. Jan 1630 Berry Pomeroy
6. John bap. 16 Jan 1632 Totnes
7. Josiah bap.29 Oct 1637 Berry Pomeroy
8. Honor bap. 8 May 1638 Berry Pomeroy
9. Japhet bap. 15 Oct 1642 Roxbury, MA
10. Hannah born 2 Dec 1644 Springfield, MA
The children John and Honor evidently died young, but no burial record has
been found.
The date of arrival and the ship which carried Samuel Chapin and his family
to Massachusetts have not been discovered, but the above information on
their children significantly narrows the time span. The commonly accepted
1635 date is obviously too early since they had a child baptised in England
on 8 May 1638. Savage states that Samuel Chapin was in Roxbury in 1639. So
he and his family must have arrived between that latter part of 1638 and
sometime in 1639. Since there is a nearly 6 year gap between the baptisms
of John and Josiah, one could speculate that Samuel Chapin did come to
Massachusetts in 1635, then returned to England and came back with his
family later. But it is also possible that there were other children born
in that time period whose baptisms are recorded in yet another parish.
To address your question about William Chapin, I have a lot of information
on the family of John Chapin and Hannah Rockwood, but I have little on
William's family beyond what is in "The Chapin Book." I am descended from
William's uncle John Chapin and his wife Phoebe Tubbs. My mother's maiden
name was Chapin also.
William Chapin was born 9 May 1823 and died 18 January 1891. His wife
Susanna Betterly was born 18 May 1821 and died 3 April 1899. They are
buried in the Dodson Cemetery, Huntington Township, Luzerne County.
I don't know where Ami and Florence are buried.
I hope this helps.
