Richard, thanks so much for your comments. Yes, Linda and I are 3rd cousins,
as we descend from brother and sister, children of Roswell's son Daniel. (my
grandmother, and her gr grandfather)
I also failed to mention he was supposed to have gone to Sydney, Shelby Co,
OH prior to Butler Co. But that is almost doubtful. No info at all
available there.
He married (1) Unknown, and had a daughter, Margaret Lucinda, b. abt.
1812, by her. No other known children.
[Linda Keller doesn't note this marriage!!!]
I don't know why Linda didn't note the marriage. His eldest daughter was
much too old to be the dau of Roswell's marriage to Sarah Marsh in 1820.
HOWEVER, Margaret Grime's age could be wrong in the 1870 Census, and she
COULD be the dau of Roswell and Sarah. My only evidence is the census below.
He md. (2) Sarah Marsh 1820, Butler Co, OH. He had sons, Daniel (my
ancestor), Samuel and Joseph by Sarah.
According to later census data, he was 66, b. VT in Nov 1850, and 85,
b. VT in Jul 1770. From the naming pattern of his children I would think he
[Helen needs to note which censuses these were? What years, etc. It was
not uncommon for censuses to be inaccurate. The enumerator may have made
a mistake or whoever gave the info did not know. Also did Helen read the
actual census!!! Not enough supporting info here!! Did the census
actually read 66, b. VT in Nov 1850!!!
Yes, I have photocopies of the Censuses from 1840 - 1870, in which Roswell
Chapin could be found. Though the early censuses have such a wide age range,
they are difficult to use to pinpoint an age or birth year. I think I worded
the census data poorly. I should have stated "enumerated" in Nov 1850.

A tip for anyone who has read this far: My grandmother's birth was reported
as Dec 30, when in fact it was Oct. 26. The printed source did not give an
original source. But, the hand written original gave the source as the tax
assessor, not a parent! So, obviously, he just knew there was a young baby
born late in the year 1870! Ages often don't match up between birth and
death!
Sorry to write so much, but hope it is clearer.
