Ditto on the great idea, Carol! My brick wall is Roswell Chapin, born
abt
1783 (1790?) in Rutland, Vermont of Daniel Chapin and Lucy Martin
Chapin.
Roswell married Sarah Marsh in 1820 in Butler County Ohio and had six
children. They lived in Somerville, Milford Township, Butler County
Ohio.
In his grandson, Silas' detailed obit from St. Louis, it is stated
that
Roswell died in Wayne County Indiana (Richmond) just six months of
being 100
years old. I *absolutely* can not find out where this old bird is
buried. I
truly believe he knew I'd come looking for him, so he deliberately
slid into
obscurity :)

My brick wall is one Roswell Chapin, b. abt 1785 (or 1790, Wardsboro),
VT.
There were 3 Roswells in the 1820 census - MA, NY, and OH. Mine was
in OH.
[This matches Linda Keller's info!!]
He married (1) Unknown, and had a daughter, Margaret Lucinda, b. abt.
1812,
by her. No other known children.
[Linda Keller doesn't note this marriage!!!]
He md. (2) Sarah Marsh 1820, Butler Co, OH. He had sons, Daniel (my
ancestor), Samuel and Joseph by Sarah.
According to later census data, he was 66, b. VT in Nov 1850, and 85,
b. VT
in Jul 1770. From the naming pattern of his children I would think he
[Helen needs to note which censuses these were? What years, etc. It was
not uncommon for censuses to be inaccurate. The enumerator may have made
a mistake or whoever gave the info did not know. Also did Helen read the
actual census!!! Not enough supporting info here!! Did the census
actually read 66, b. VT in Nov 1850!!!
was
the son of Daniel (Samuel, Joseph, Seth, Josiah, Deac. Samuel) Chapin,
who
died in Wardsboro, VT, 1791, and Lucy (Martin) of Windsor Co, VT,
whose only
children were Roswell and sister - Margaret Lucinda. Roswell's son
Daniel
also named children Roswell and Margaret Lucinda.
But - the VT birth record for their Roswell Chapin states he was born
Dec 20,
1790. He is said to have left Vt. for OH at the age of 17. Did he
lie about
his age, perhaps adding 5 years?? Did he go elsewhere before OH? Who
did he
marry first?
He is also said to have died just 6 months short of 100, in IN. But,
what
year would that have been? I have been unable to locate a death
record.
I feel like this is a brick well, not wall. I am surrounded by
bricks!
Thanks for any help at all.
Helen Benter in CA.
[Linda & Helen need to compare their research and go on the preponderance
of evidence. Remember doing genealogy research is not an exact science
and is full of brick walls!!!]

PS: I searched Gilbert W. Chapin's "CHAPIN BOOK" and the only Roswell
that could fit would be the son of Daniel (Samuel, Joseph, Seth, Josiah,
Deac. Samuel) Chapin, who died in Wardsboro, VT 1791.
