Daniel Mann Chapin passed away April 16, 2006, early in the morning
at his home in Prairie Village, KS. Services were held April 20, 2006,
with interment of the ashes in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Dan was born July 3, 1921, in Chicago, IL, to Arthur Barber Chapin
and Elizabeth Mann Chapin. He was the second of five children.
Dan served in World War II, where he was a paratrooper in the 517
Parachute Regimental Combat Division. He received the Bronze Star
as well as two purple hearts from campaigns in the Battle of the Bulge,
southern France and Italy. Dan belonged to the following organizations:
American Legion Post 370, VFW Post 846, 517 Parachute Regimental Combat
Team Assn., SAR (Sons of American Revolution), and the Wood Chippers Club
of Kansas City. Dan retired from Hallmark where he had worked for almost
20 years as an engineer. He was an expert in Optics in particular the
physics of optics and how it applied to cameras. He was recognized as
an expert and was unique in his ability to practically apply his
knowledge
of chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering in the field of optics
and photography.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jean Baird. He is
survived by his daughters, Danielle Chapin Norvell of Overland Park and
Lark Elizabeth Chapin and son-in-law, Donald Monfort Bernard III, of
Houston, TX; along with twin grandsons, Jake Chapin Ellis and Griffin
Mann Ellis; sister, Ruth Chapin Fort of Chevy Chase, MD; and
Jay Conderman Chapin of Salem, MA.
