Galesburg
Went home with Jesus on Wednesday, October 25, 2006. He was
born April 26, 1930 in Kalamazoo, the son of Merle and Winona
(Comings) Chapin and had been a lifelong resident of Galesburg.
Jim was employed as a service technician by Commercial Equipment for
30 years and after he retired he worked part time for Harding's Market.
He was a member of the Galesburg United Methodist Church, where he served
as the Chairman of the Board, served on the Galesburg City Council for 8
years, was currently on the planning commission, and served on the School
Board for 4 years. After his retirement, Jim and Jackie volunteered
at the Next Door, a shelter for homeless women, were mentors with
Kids HOPE-USA for 3 years, and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels.
He was a Civil War buff, loved to travel, camp, canoe, deer hunt
and spend time with family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jackie of Galesburg; their
children, Mike Chapin of Kalamazoo, Jim, Jr. (Diane) Chapin of Midland,
Nancy (Michael) Squires of Dunedin, FL, Linda (Steve) Rogers of Richland
and Dan Chapin of Kalamazoo; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren;
brother, David Chapin of Galesburg; sisters, Betty Orth of Soldotna,
Alaska, and Mary (Ronald) Fisher of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday in the Galesburg
United Methodist Church, 111 W. Battle Creek St. with Major James Chapin,
Jr., officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Galesburg.
The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes,
Galesburg Chapel, 145 W. Battle Creek St. on Sunday from 3-7 PM.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
