I am searching for information about John CHAPIN (son of Phineas) who was born in
Springfield MA on 1 May 1753, married Margaret ELY, and moved to NY.
He is listed in the 1790 Granville NY census, and in some references seems to have then
moved to Ogdensburg. However, the only John Chapin I've found there was bornn in June
1739, participated in the French and Indian, Ewvolution and War of 1812 before dying 6
months after his 100th birthday.
The records see to not know where the older John came from (no parents listted) or where
the younger John went. it appears that Margeret was insane for 60 years, although I
don't know if she moved to NY.
From John & Margeret, my line is through Margeret CHAPIN and
Collins BROWN to Quartus BROWN and Tirzah SMITH to Semantha Caroline BROWN and Ebenezer
Lewis FERRY to Achsa Tirzah FERRY and Fred BELKNAP whose son Floyd Wesley BELKNAP
(Masonville NY 1883-1962) was my great grandfather.
I am interested in any information about Margaret and John, primarily any service in the
Revolution of War of 1812.
Although it's possible that both John CHAPINS lived in Ogdensburg (and were probably
both related to Deacon Samuel CHAPIN) it is also possible that the younger John moved
elsewhere in NY and that the lives of both have become one.
