Vicinity Obituary:
Taylor Chapin
CLEVELAND, Jan. 6 -- Taylor Chapin, former prominent Oneida business man, a resident of
this village since 1927, died early Monday morning at his home in North street, following
a six-week's illness. Mr. Chapin was son of Samuel and Fannie Sage Chapin, and was
born in the town of Vernon and had lived most of his life in Oneida, where for many years
he was a prominent diamond, jewelry and silverware merchant. The business was established
in 1848 as Samuel Chapin and Son.
In 1907 Mr. Chapin purchased the interests of his father and brother, the late Samuel, Jr.
He remodeled the store, introduced the mahogany horseshoe type showcase and wall fixtures,
and the store was for many years one of the most prominent jewelry establishments in
central New York. Mr. Chapin's expert knowledge of diamonds created for him many
customers from out of the state.
In 1924 he sold his business and retired. He then purchased the former Howard O'Conner
homestead on the lake shore, this village, where the family came summers at first, and
later made it their permanent home, and where Mr. Chapin spent most of his time fishing
and boating.
While in Oneida Mr. Chapin was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, active in the Elks
lodge, and contributed to all matters of civic nature. He was a descendant of the Russell
Sage family.
Mr. Chapin was twice married, first, to Miss Flora Ella Coe of Ypsalanti [sic], Mich., who
died many years ago, and a daughter, Mrs. Flora Chapin Humphres [sic] of Oneida survives.
His second marriage was to Miss Josephine Muthig Chapin, who survives with their daughter,
Miss C. Helen Chapin, a student nurse in Utica. Also surviving are two brothers, Homer of
Oneida, and Fremont of Syracuse, and several nieces and nephews.
Private rites will be held at the Munroe funeral home, Oneida, 10 a. m. Wednesday, with
the Rev. George B. Swinnerton, pastor emeritus of the First Presbyterian church
officiating, and burial will be in Glenwood cemetery, Oneida. The bearers are Lyle Chapin,
S. J. Rickard, Arthur A. Kinney, Robert Burns, Torrey Cruthers of Oneida, and Eugene A.
Westcott, Jr. of Cleveland. Friends may call at the Munroe parlors, Oneida, Tuesday night
from 7 to 9 p. m.
Note: Cleveland is in Oswego Co., NY
