Death in the Wind!
At least Twelve People are Killed, and Many others Injured.
Wednesday afternoon, at about 4 o'clock, a storm came up from the southeast until it
reached a point four miles due east of Haven, where it appeared to split, and what we
supposed was the heavier part appeared to go towards the northeast. From this part of
town we could see only a black and angry looking cloud, but several persons east of here
distinctly saw a cyclone form and dip downwards and rise again a number of times before it
begun its destructive journey. It took up debris and dirt in these dips, and shortly
moved off in a zig zag way northeastward. The first damage we learn of was at George
Keener's farm, about eight miles from where it was seen to form, in Harvey county,
where it seems to have struck the earth. It demolished a windmill and killed a cow for
Keener, and then struck the widow Fry's house, tearing it to splinters. The family
went to the cellar and so escaped except a slight injury to the lady. It wrecked
everything in its path for a distance of t!
wenty miles.
So far reported the dead are:
Four member of the Schmidt family --- father, mother, son and daughter.
Mrs. Joseph Wear and three children killed outright, and the little boy died today, making
five.
Cora Neff, a young lady.
William Armstrong and his mother-in-law, Grandma Chapin.
About a dozen other persons are severely injured, and over a hundred head of stock
killed.
Seventeen dwellings were literally blown to fragments, and many other buildings. The
storm lifted about twenty miles northeast of here, but was seen to pass directly over
Mound Ridge, doing no damage, but raining down wreckage of every description, and
fragments and whole carcasses of dead cattle, horses and hogs.
