Yes, we are keeping them separate. At least I know I am.
The Willard who has been the most recent topic of discussion is one of eleven children (at last count), although only ten were listed in the 1880 Census for the household.
Nathan F Chapin Self M W 51
Elizabeth Chapin Wife F W 48
Cyrus F Chapin Son M W 26
Edwin M Chapin Son M W 25
Frederick Chapin Son M W 21
Addie Chapin Dau F W 19
George Chapin Son M W 17
Williard Chapin Son M W 15
Albert E Chapin Son M W 13
Emma Chapin Dau F W 11
Essie Chapin Dau F W 9
Ward Chapin Son M W 6
Census Place: Olean, Cattaraugus, New York
It appears that daughter Imogene was born after 1880.
This more obscure leg of the Chapin family was decidedly nomadic, but appears to have moved mostly as an entire clan in its travels. It was but a mere five years after this census was taken that virtually all of the family wound up in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas, which was where Fred, my g-g-grandfather, met and married his wife, Eada Belle Parrish. Fred and Eada wound up making their home in Little Rock, Arkansas when their only child, Hattie Belle, married Victor Claude Balding when Hattie was about 14. They went on to have seven children of their own, including my maternal grandmother, Doris Geneva Balding Williams.
My understanding about Willard from the previous poster is that he died in California. From one of my cousins, I have found that he is buried in a cemetery in Santa Monica. She promises to get a photo of the grave in the near future and I will be happy to share with Willard's descendents and their families.

Most interesting, that propensity toward the lumber business. My gg-grandfather, Edward Chapin (1820-1900) had a lumber business with his two sons, Samuel and Frank, in Lone Rock, WI. And his grandson, my grandfather, was a home builder in Janesville, WI, in the 1920's-1940's. My father helped him, and I was raised in a garage full of woodworking tools, which came in handy with this old house I've been remodeling from the inside out, for six years, now. One of my gg-grandfather's cousins in NY state removed to SC to conduct his lumbering business, and founded the town of CHAPIN, SC. Definitely a family propensity, this love of wood.

I am so glad that you have contacted me. I am at work, so I need to be home to have more info. However, my grgr grandmother Essie Chapin (Nathan Foster Chapin's daughter) lived in Fort Scott Kansas with her Children Broshia Shephard and Elbert Shephard. My grandmother Broshia often spoke of her times in Fort Scott. I think we should be able to work together to find a lot of info. Thank you so much.

No, my Fred died here in Little Rock and is buried at Oakland Cemetery. (I've created a record for him at findagrave.)
My research shows that Huldah and Rebecca Foster were sisters and I suspect that Huldah died eitherin childbirth or shortly after Nathan Foster's birth. I think you are right about using the female Fosters' maiden name for Nathan Foster Chapin's middle name.
Another member of the boards found an 1885 census from Fort Scoot (Bourbon County) Kansas that shows most of the whole Nathan Foster Chapin crew there, and Frederick is still living with his parents. That must have been where he met and married Eada Belle Parrish (Chapin), because my great-grandmother Hattie Belle Chapin, was born there on 5/26/1887.
Here's the link to my tree on rootsweb for comparison.

How wonderful! I also have the 1880 census. Nathan Foster Chapin was my grgr grandfather. His wife's name was Elizabeth Harris. I am trying to find info on Nathan Foster"s parents. I beleive the "Foster" was the surname of wives. I think that Nathan Foster Chapins father was married to a Hedulah Foster, and when she died he married her sister Rebecca Foster. I know that my Nathan Foster Chapin owned lumber mills, and his sons were carpenters. Did your Fred die in Olean NY?

Chapin is hardly the only name that has names that look or sound similar in
other languages, most of tehm unrelated - and Chapin is not even the best
example. From Chapin to Shapon is quite a stretch. First of all, now I
know French, and Chapin pronounced in French would be sha - pan'.
I'll try this one more time. Where did you get both this French name thing,
and the notion that Deacon Chapin's father was French? I mean, what is
your source, and what specifically is the evidence?
I'd say taht the church records from his own parish tracing his family back
two generations in that town pretty much disprove your idea, but I'm stil
curious where you got it.

Just found your 2003 post on Nathan Foster Chapin. He was the father of my g-g-granfather, Frederick, born 1858.
I can point you to an 1880 census that lists all the members of the household, but have gotten stuck myself on who Nathan Foster's parents were or what his wife's (Elizabeth) maiden name was.

Hi Dee, after reviewing some of the data I found and noting that your
g-grandmother Hattie Belle was born in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., KS and an
1885 Kansas State census for a N F Chapin with a son Fred. With this info
I began to doubt that Fred's father was Solon! Fred's older brother Cyrus
was born in PA, so with this info I looked for census records for this
Cyrus. From this search I determined that N F Chapin was Nathan or
Nathaniel Foster Chapin. Hence I having to start over again! Will keep
you informed.

Message Board Post:
He was only modestly important in his own community in his own time. He was a deacon and community leader. He is ancestral to most people with old New England ancestry, and he has teh distinction of having no aristocratic blood whatever. In fact, he could barely read and write. His efforts to list where people should sit in the church are a howl. He epitomized what New Englanders of the 19th and early 20th centuries wanted to think their ancestors were.
The Totnes ancestry is correct. It is based on local records. His recent ancestry and his wife's is known.
Where in the world did the notion that his father was from France come from?
No, the name does not appear to be French. It is unusual an dmay possibly be confined to this line, atleast in this country.
Yours,
Dora Smith

To Whom this may concern, Chapin is prounounced Shapon (phonetic) in French
and it means "maker of silk slippers" in the Norman dialect of the French
language. It is suspected that Chapin arrived in England during the Norman
invasion of England in 1066 as occupying forces and became engrained in the
culture and life of England between that time and recorded history.
Respectfully,
Kenneth L. Chapin, direct descendant of Deacon Samuel on the Chapin side,
and the Beverlys, Randolphs, Carters, Byrds, and Blands of Virginia and the
Jamestown plantations.

Note that your Solon (b. ~1830, NY) has no parents listed at Worldconnect, vs the Solon b. 1803 who does (plus he was b. PA), so I think you're back to square one, albeit an earlier one than you were before :^|
