The Chapin genealogy is at Ancestry.com, I think. I'm pretty sure I've
used it there. It's excellent; two volumes, I think, and so up to date my
grandmother is in it.
The date of birth of this individual, even approximate, would be a real
help.

I have a book called Chapin, SC: The First Hundred Years which has a full
chapter on Martin Chapin. That was my jumping off point for this research,
however there is a gap in the information about James Chapin who moved to NY
and when he died--nothing about other children of James. I will stop at the
Chamber and see if anything else is available. Thank you.

Have you contacted the Chamber of Commerce of Chapin,SC? They have produced
a nice book of the early Chapins. They have tried for years to get our
family to live there! Its a beautiful area!

am looking for the family of Martin Chapin 5 Jun 1821 Cortland, NY- 31 Aug
894 Chapin, Lexington Co., SC) who left Cortland, NY to come to SC. His
ather’s name was James (1780 Chicopee, Hampden, MA- NY?), [s/o George and
hebe (Sikes)] and his mother
as Jane Charlotte Blackman (Huntington, Fairfield Co., CT- NY). Martin
arried there 16 Jun 1850 Laura Ann Benjamin (28 Jul 1829 Dillard, NY-11 Mar
919 Union Co., SC).
A book “The First 100 years….” of Chapin, SC, said that Martin Chapin left
ortland, NY ca 1850 for Columbia, SC, the state capital. He was enumerated
here in the 1850 census. Because of bad health (he only had one lung), he
oved away from the "city" to about 40 miles west of Columbia, into the
country' where the town of Chapin is now located. Within 38 years he had
urchased over 4200 acres of land. Probably due to his land ownership, the
rea was named after him when it became a town in 1889.
My desire is to learn more about his parents James and Jane Charlotte
Blackman) Chapin, when and where they died and if they hand any other
hildren. Thank you.

I have been reading the book "Masquerade" by Alfred F. Young which is
about Deborah Sampson, a woman who disguised herself as a man in order
to enlist in the Revolutionary War.
Deborah lived in Massachusetts and was a teacher at one time in her
life. On page 46, it mentions that one of her students in
Middleborough, MA was a Hannah Chapin. The book mentions Hannah in 1858
recounting an episode from her childhood demonstrating the type of
disciplinarian Deborah was in her one-room schoolhouse.
Does anyone know which Hanna Chapin and in which family she belongs?
