Iam a descendant of Deacon Samuel Chapin also. In my searching I have
found the name to have changed before he was born. I have found a Roger Chapyn b
1534 Of Totness Or Paignton,Devonshire,England d. 9 Sept 1590
Constantine,Falmouth,Cornwall,England... I have other Chapin names spelled the same too. Is
this correct? Or could this just be a typo?

Montague, I have the following information:
Married Gratia Chapin on 5/23/1812 in MA
Married Rebecca Ackley (Hakely, Akely), a widow, in VT on 6/10/1812 One of my husband's relatives has a copy of the marriage certificate from VT on Joel and Rebecca for 6/10/1812. They were married in Guilford, Windham Ct, VT.
How could he be married to 2 women in 2 states at the same time?? Or did Gratia died between the time she married Joel on 5/23/1812 and the time he married Rebecca on 6/10/1812?? Do you know how far Bernardstown, MA and the Castleton,Poultney, VT are from each other? Our records indicate that Joel was a lumberman so maybe he was busy :)
We show the births as follows:
Climena as being born in 1813 and 1807. According to Potter Co, Sharon Township, PA records she was born in 1807 in MA. States she was known as Minnie and married a Arunah "Myron" Hyde on 1/19/1824 and died 1837. If she was born in 1807, that would make her 17, which would be a more reasonable age. Your records indicate that Thankful and Joel only had one child: Sarah Burke Warner, born 2/8/1800 and married a Lewis Prouty. So where does this person fit in? Are we sure that Thankful and Gratia were not the same person and there was only 2 marriages?
Oliver Chapin Warner-b 1809 in MA
Anson Cliston Warner-b 1811 in MA
Charlotte Warner-b 1816 in MA, married a Lackey
Gratia T. Warner-b 2/20/1813 in VT
Rebecca H. Warner-b 5/14/1816
Oliver Warner-b about 1818 in MA
Joel P. Warner-b 8/1819 in VT
Horace Warner-b 1820 in MA
Edson Warner-b 1821 MA or VT? m Esther Gibbs, m Hulda Nichols. died 3/23/1900 at New Market, New Jersy.
Rachel Warner, b 1823 MA or VT?
So we show Joel had 12 children with 2-3 wives and not the 10 you show! Wow!
So it seems Joel was bouncing around between the MA, VT (Castleton, Poultney, Guilford) area and the Sharon, PA area. My goodness.
I think something is amiss with the marriage dates of Gratia and Rebecca. Or perhaps some of the children were either Rebecca's from the first marriage or Gratia's. Was Gratia ever married before? If she and Joel married in 1812, that would have made her 32 years old....quite old for a first marriage don't you think? Thankful was 25 when she married Joel, and Gratia was 6 years younger. Do you think maybe the married date was 5/23/1802 instead of 1812? But then that would not work because Thankful did not pass away until 4/5/1812 unless her death date is 1802 and not 1812. You state Thankful and Joel only had 1 child: Sarah Burke Warner. I think something is amiss with the dates for Gratia, don't you think? We have no records on Gratia-birth, death, marriage, etc.

Thank you again, Montague. I have an interesting question for you. Do you have military records for Lt. Chapin? Montague sounds like a French name. Is Chapin French? We have always been told there is Indian ancestry in the family. Do you have record of anything like that on the Chapin side? Do you know when Gratia died? Our records, too, were very confusing as it showed Joel married to Gracia in VT and Rebecca Ackley in VT! Joel P. Warner was born in 1819 so she would have had to have died before that time. Apparently Rebecca was much younger as Joel would have been 46 at the time of Joel P. Warner's birth. Do you have any information or pictures of Joel and Gratia or Thankful at all or any pictures or other documents of the Chapin side of the family? Obviously there are alot of half cousins out there! What is your line?
Thank you.

Thank you so much for your information! Yes, I would like all of the information you have. Our records indicate that Joel D. married Rebecca Ackley and that he and she are buried in Sharon Township, PA. From what we can determine our Joel P. or "Phelps" as we was known married a Phidelia Gates from the Castleton, VT area, which is near Poultney, Vt and then moved to Iowa. Apparently Joel P. must be the child of Joel D. and Rebecca. At least you clarify our Warner chain. Do you have any information on how Thankful died. Marrying the sister 7 weeks later. Seems wierd unless there was a lot of children to take care of, huh? On the Gates side of our family, we have an ancestor that had 18 children with 2 wives-4 with 1 and 14 with the other. That had children every year and most of them died...

Hi Linda: Here goes:Thankful Chapin & Gratia Chapin were the two daughters (Among other children) of Lieut.Joel & Sarah (Burke) Chapin. Thankful was born Nov. 11th 1774 & died April 5th 1812. She married Joel Warner who was the son of Ichabod Warner on April 27th 1799, Joel Warner was born June 19th 1773.
They had one daughter named Sarah Burke Chapin born Feb. 8th 1800. She married a Lewis Prouty April 14th 1819.
After Thankful died, Joel Warner married Thankful's sister Gratia Chapin on May 23rd 1812 (7 weeks after Thankful died) I have no dates of her birth or death, but my information does say Bernardston.Mass. There were 4 children from the marriage of Joel & Gratia, first was Climena, then Charlotte, then Oliver, then Horace. There are no dates of birth or death of any of these children, but Climena did marry a man by the name of Arunah Hyde of Poultney, Vermont on Jan. 19th 1824 at this point, something doesnt add up, I assume that Climena was at least 18 at the time she got married, and if one subtracts 18 from 1824, that would be 1806, six years before her mother (Gratia) married Joel. (Theres a mystery here somewhere) I would ordinarily have thought that Climena was born about a year after Gratia & Joel were married, which would have been about 1813, but if Climena was married in 1824, that would have made Climena 11 years old. I'm sure that didnt happen. I can only come to !
one of several conclusions, its a typographical error, or an error in submitting the original information, an adopted child, or maybe Climena was the daughter by Thankful, Joels first wife.Anyway, enough for now about Climena. Charlotte it seems married someone by the name of Lackey, who resided in Whitehall, New York. No other information whatsoever. Nothing about Oliver, and only to mention that Horace never married. All in all, somewhat skimpy information regarding the 4 children of Joel & Gratia.
It goes on to say that Joel Warner married a 3rd time to a Mrs. Rebecca Ackley of Halifax, Vermont, and that they moved out West where he died. There were 5 children by this third wife, but absolutely no information on those 5 children. So Joel had 10 children by three wives (Sounds like my old man who had 9 children by three wives)
I hope I havent confused you so far, as theres more.
All the information I have given you so far is from a two volume book called the "Chapin Books" published by the Chapin Family Association (No longer in exsistance) in 1924, but I have another book published in 1862 which shows the children of Lieut. Joel & Sarah (Burke) Chapin which doesnt show Thankful as a daughter, but does show Gratia as a daughter. The Chapin book shows 8 children, the 1862 book only shows 6 children, the two children missing in the 1862 book are named Sarah & Thankful, but are found in the 1924 Chapin book.
Were you wanting information regarding Lieut. Joel Chapin, Thankful & Gratia's father? he was the 5th generation from Deacon Samuel Chapin, I assume you already know about him. Lieut. Joel Chapin got his commission in the French & Indian war of 1755, he also served in the Revolution war of 1776.
I hope I havent confused you, it can get complicated.
Sincerely, Montague Chapin

Hi list
I know I've seen him in someones line. Does anyone have him?
My great-great-great grandfather was Levi H. Chapin born in Heath
Massachusetts in Aug 19 1809. He died and was buried in Symco Wisconsin. In between he
moved to New York and married Betsy Durfee. They had 4 children 3 of which
were born in Leon, NY. I have heard that his travels took him through
Pennsylvania and Ohio. Betsy died in Wisconsin in the late 1850's or early 1860's and
Levi sent back to New York for her sister Loraine to take care of the
children. They married in 1861 but never had any children.
