I've "rescued" a group of NEWCOMB Family photographs which include the
following:
1. James NEWCOMB, taken at the Giles Bishop Studio in New London, CT,
1870's or 1880's, man in his 50's or 60's, note "New London
Merchant"
2. Harriet Chapell NEWCOMB with Edith, taken at the Giles Bishop Studio
in New London, CT, dated 1882, Harriet appears to be in her 20's, and Edith
is 2 years old, note "Edith born 1880"
3. Clara Winifred NEWCOMB, taken at the Rockwood Studio in New York
City, NY, dated December 1888, Clara appears to be about 4 years old at the
time
4. "One of the NEWCOMB Children", taken at the Rockwood Studio in New
York City, NY, 1880's, appears to be a girl about 3 years old, note "Edith
b. 1880, Richard b. 1882, and Clara b. 1884"
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information
regarding the family:
James NEWCOMB b. 6 Mar 1819 in Derby, CT to parents Silas NEWCOMB (b. 10 Jun
1786 in Sunderland, VT) and Betsey PALMER (b. 1784 in Stonington, CT).
James was one of 6 children born to this couple including, Robert Palmer;
John Lee; John Lee II; James; Charlotte Palmer; and Silas NEWCOMB all born
between 1813 and 1823 in Derby, CT. His parents may have died when he was
young as records indicate that he was adopted by an Uncle, Calvin NEWCOMB of
Windham, CT. James is said to have married twice, first in 1845 to Caroline
A. NOYES and again in Sept 1847 to Sarah Anna or Anton WEAVER. James was a
Merchant in New London, CT and died 11 Dec 1908.
Harriet Wetmore CHAPELL b. 1 Aug 1856 in New London, CT to parents Richard
H. CHAPELL and Cornelia C. WETMORE. Harriet married Frederick Seymour
NEWCOMB (b. 24 Feb 1852 in New London, CT) on 11 Oct 1877 in New London, CT
and together they had 6 children including, Edith Turner; Richard Chapell;
Clara Winnifred; Ruth Wetmore; Theodore; and Cornelia Chapell NEWCOMB, all
born between 1880 and 1896 in New London, CT.
Edith Turner NEWCOMB b. 4 May 1880 in New London, CT to parents Frederic
Seymour NEWCOMB and Harriet Wetmore CHAPELL.
Clara Winifred NEWCOMB b. 5 Feb 1884 in New London, CT to parents Frederic
Seymour NEWCOMB and Harriet Wetmore CHAPELL. She married Ernest Adna BACK
(b. 7 Oct 1880 in Northampton, MA) on 27 Sept 1919 in Washington DC. The
couple had two children, David Newcomb BACK and Richard Chapell BACK the
first born in New London, CT and the second in Washington DC in 1920 and
1921 respectively.
