Hallo Michael and Jacqueline
Just very basic details - Marriage licences were not a Civil record but an
application to marry without the need for Banns being called three times.
This did away with the inconvenience of the delay but also the publicity.
(According to one book I have well to do people felt it undignified to
invite every Tom , Dick and Harry in the parish to object to their
marriage). Most people who could afford the fee married by Licence but that
doesnt always mean they were wealthy.
The Bridegroom would apply for a Licence to a Surrogate in the Diocese by
making a formal Allegation which included an Oath that there was no legal
impediment to the marriage and if one of the parties was underage this had
to supported by consent of the parents. (That is assuming that of course
everyone told the truth - I have one where the Bride was under the age of
consent but the Bridegroom states they are both of legal age).
The Licence was then given to the Minister who was to perform the marriage.
Regards
Christine

Hi Michael: The date of John/Mary's marriage license was Aug 1, 1754. I
don't have the actual marriage record. Marriage by license was not
uncommon
in this line. Not sure why. I think I read somewhere that some families
liked to marry by license because they considered it better to have a
civil
as well as a church document.
Your birth details re Samuel Chant 1776 are correct. He married Susannah
Hawkins in 1798 as far as I know, but I don't have the marriage record. I
have the same information you do about their children, from the IGI. The
only one for which I have the baptism record is Samuel 1799. I am in the
process of ordering the films to confirm the rest.
Regards, Jacqueline
