Help from a fellow Genie visiting Adelaide in South
Australia extracted the following info for :
South Australian Arrivals
There were actually two distinct groups of people with
the surname CHANT who arrived in South Australia on the
"Octavia" 19th July 1855 leaving Southampton on the
18th April 1855. Their details are as follows:-
1st GROUP: Government Immigrants i.e. passage paid by the Government.
Mr. & Mrs. Chant, and three single women with surname Chant. No Christian
names given.
2nd GROUP: People who paid towards the cost of their passage, and the rest
of their fare was paid by South Australia.
Elizabeth Chant, aged 40yrs, paid One English Pound towards
the fare, and Six English Pounds for her "outfit" ( Outfit refers to
clothing and tools of trade etc. which they
arrived with).
Thomas Chant aged 20yrs paid Two English Pounds
Mary A. Chant aged 17yrs paid One English Pound.
Anna M. Chant aged 15yrs paid One English pound
Alexander Chant aged 9yrs paid Ten English Shillings.
Having left from Southampton these Chant's are most
likely to have come from Devon, Dorset, Hampshire,
Somerset or Wiltshire Chant family lines.
Elizabeth's husbands name is still uncertain. She would
have married circa 1830-35. A search of Chant in the 1851 Census for
Elizabeth 36/37 years old with children
Thomas aged about 16, Mary about 13, Anna about 11 and Alexander aged about
5 should be made. Checking 1851
census indexes for the above counties should throw up only one or two
possibilities.
SA Certificate data for all four children in South Australia etc should
provide clues for the father. To date suggested as a Daniel Chant but as
certificate details can
be inaccurate, especially Death ones, all four childrens records for
marriage/death and his widow's death cert.
need to be checked for the fathers name.
Elizabeth Chant's son Alexander Chant name is unusal
enough a first name to help narrow down possible Chant
lines and a certificate from UK records and 1851 Census.
Thirdly the identity of the other couple on the "Octavia"
Mr and Mrs Chant and their three daughters should be
located. This family may provide clues to Elizabeths
origins. As they had their fare paid for by the Government their names
should be listed in a government assisted Immigrants list somewhere.
