Dear listers,
I have been reading all the messages for the last few months in the hope I might find a
connection with my family but have had no success so far.
My great grandfather was Frederick Chant, a coachman (or he was in 1885).
My elderly aunt believes he came from somewhere in Somerset.
He died at the age of 31, when my great uncle was about 1 year old (I need to check the
records for this). That would be in 1889 and would mean he was born in 1858, or
thereabouts. I believe his wife was Catherine Stevens and my aunt remembers he had a
sister, possibly named Anne or Annie, who married a Cotterill and also lived in Wilton
Road.
In 1885 he lived in Wilton Road, Handsworth, Birmingham where my grandfather was born ( I
have the birth certificate for this).
My grandfather was Frederick Chant, born 27th July 1885 in Handsworth,
Birmingham, England. Died 1st March 1956, He married Florence Helen Langford in 1914
He had a brother, Albert Chant born 2 years after (1887). and three children, all
born in Handsworth, Birmingham - Frederick Albert (my father) born 13th
November 1914, died 24th February 1979, Hilda Florence born 18th August 1916
and George Arthur born February 2nd 1930.
I have the 1881 cencus CDs also the vital records and the 1852 cencus but these are no
help - the only Frederick Chants born at about the right time came from Kent. There are
two on the IGI from Somerset but there's no way I can link up with them.
I'm retiring in a couple of months' time and will then have more time for
travelling around and checking records - but in the meantime, has anyone any ideas?
All suggestions gratefully received.
Regards, and a Happy New Year to you all,
Gill Chant (sister of Barbara).
