Subject: Re: [CHANT] Thomas Chant of Bridgewater
Sean's posting hasn't got to the list yet but here is what he has said:
Hello Listers,
Thomas Clement Ormiston Chant born Hampstead, London son of Thomas Chant of
Bridgewater and wife Laura Ormiston Dibben is listed on the 1901 census
aged
19 living at:
with his parents, Thomas Snr working as a medical
practitioner and 3 siblings. It is difficult to read what occupation Thomas
Jnr was involved in as the entry has been crossed out and corrected,
however it
appears to be either mechanical? Or medical?...perhaps the latter given his
father's profession.
It is clear that the family moved around in their early years given the
birth places of the children.
Emeline O born Lowestoft, Suffolk 1879
Ethel O born Kingsclere, Hamps 1881
Thomas C O born Hampstead 1882
Olive O born 1885 Hampstead
It is also clear that all the children were given Ormiston as a middle
name.
They must have been an interesting, prosperous family for the times. The
daughters were art students and the eldest a "singer".
I have definite birth index for Thomas Jnr:
June Qtr 1882 Hampstead 1a 632.
I also feel that I have definite marriage entry for him.
Dec Qtr 1906 Kensington 1a 238 for Thomas Clement O Chant to either Anna
Larsen or Dorothy Gye.
Anyone know what happened to Thomas C O Chant?
Regards,
Sean
Hi Sean,
Good to see a posting from you and that you have sorted out the problem
which I had been working on. When Richard Davidson and I were first in touch
about this family we had decided that we were not 100% happy that the right
Thomas was being attributed to Thomas and Laura Chant.
Strangely enough I had the same Thomas going to the U.S. in both the right
and wrong families so he would have caused me to wonder a bit had I spotted
the
duplication. Then I would have done something about the crossed line, of
course.
I think the marriage in 1882 could have gone on FreeBMD only fairly
recently. It will be interesting to see if there is anything forthcoming to
prove
which lady was Thomas Clement Chant's wife and if anyone has any children
for
them.
My interest in the family, of course, stems from the Joseph Chant and Maria
Criddle pair as Joseph is one of those individuals listed as born in
Stoke-sub-Hamdon whose parentage I have not been able to confirm to my
satisfaction.
Cheers,
John
