Hello Christine,
Yes I agree with your 1871 census for Mary and family. I have looked and
looked and looked and looked....are you getting the picture ? for Thomas
with no joy on the 1871 census. I have tried all manner of searches for
him.
As for his other sons, Henry and George. I have these:
i) Henry Chant: I fairly certain I have found him on the 1871 census
aged 21, unmarried living at 5 Paragon Place, Bermondsey, London living
with a William Caplin. Henry is working as a labourer. It does have his
place of birth as Walsall, which of course is not correct but given the
fact that his mother and siblings are living at Walsall it makes sense.
However what clinches it for me is that a cousin of Henry, and the
census return states he was born at Sherborne. Charles is also working
as a tailor which was Henry's fathers occupation at the time. Oddly
enough under Charles's name on the return is a faint Chant with no
further details...could this be Thomas ? A long shot maybe.
On Henry I can't find any more records of him after 1871.......that
includes a death record.
ii) George: I believe that he is a patient in hospital in Walsall. The
age is quite correct, however it has his place of birth as Weymouth,
Dorset...that is the only glitch, however as far as i can tell there was
no George Chant born at Weymouth at that time, and given the fact that
it is Walsall where his mother siblings are living at the time. It is a
reasonable assumption.
By the way interestingly as you know George ended up living at Southwark
which neighbours Bermondsey as anyone who is familiar with the big smoke
knows. One wonders if George went to London shortly after 1871 where his
big brother Henry was living ?
Just on this family. THomas's other two sons, Charles b. 1854 and James
Herbert (Herbert on the 1871 and James on the 1881 and 1891) are causing
my grief. What happened to them ? Michael as you will know the Sherborne
Parish Records show a burial for Charles Chant, infant during 1862. THis
might be him however by then Charles was 8. Generally infant means less
than a year old. However as far as I am aware there were no infant
Charles Chant in Sherborne at this time. So it could be him. I suppose
purchase of the death cert will answer that one.
James Herbert also seems to disappear after 1891. He is not on the 1901
census, however I can't find a death record for him between 1891 and
1901.
Any help with Charles and James Herbert would be great.
Regards,
Sean

I assume that you meant the 1861 census with George about 1 year old as
found the following:-
No joy with the 1851
1861 Sherborne - all listed as born Sherborne
Thomas aged 37 Occupation Tailor
Mary Ann 40
Henry Thomas 11
Mary Ann 9
Susan 4
George 2
1871 no joy with husband Thomas
but in Walsall Staffordshire born Sherborne are:
Mary Ann 48 Laundress
Susan 14
Bessie 6
Herbert J 2
