DAVENPORT, Iowa - Byron L. Chant, 80, of Davenport, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at
Trinity Pathway Hospice in Bettendorf.
Service will be at St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport. Burial will be at
Memorial Park Cemetery, Muscatine.
Visitation will be at Weerts Funeral Home. Additional visitation is at the church.
Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church Foundation or the National
Cancer Institute.
Mr. Chant was born in 1928 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Byron B. and Emma Chant.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he married Roberta 'Bobbie' Weber on
Nov. 19, 1950, in Muscatine. He worked in the personnel department of the Iowa-Illinois
Gas and Electric Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1990.
He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1945, then served in the Navy as Seaman 2nd
class. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1950 obtaining a bachelor's. He was
very devoted to his family and took great interest in everyone's lives.
He enjoyed reading, golf, R.C. airplanes, jazz music and playing his saxophone. He learned
to play the saxophone at age 70, often playing with the CASI Band and the church
symphony.
He is survied by his wife, Bobbie Chant; a daughter, Julie Badger and husband, Steve,
Cedar Rapids, a son, John Chant and wife, Kim, of Davenport; four grandchildren, Steve
Badger and wife, Amanda; Lisa Nelson and husband, Chad; Tom Chant and Cpl Stacey Gamet and
husband, Cpl Steven U.S.M.C.; four great-grandchildren, Skyler Bowers Nelson, Halle
Nelson, Lucas Badger and Kelan Gamet; three step-grandchildren, Zachery Kern, D.C., Rachel
Kern and Joseph Kern.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Bonnie.
