Hello Listers,
Laura Ormiston Chant nee Dibbin was a very progressive lady! If you look at
this list archive you may see what has been recorded already. This was the
entry for the 1901 census for her family:

The children are listed in age order. Ethel appears between daughter Emmeline
(named after Mrs Pankhurst?) and son Thomas. Why was she born in Hampshire? I
have no proof as yet but feel that Ethel was her daughter-in-law, and
Thomas's wife, not her child as I recorded before.
If you look at the Ellis Island web site there is a Thomas with his family in
transit to New Mexico. He is a railwayman, which fits in very nicely with the
1901 census description. He is the only Thomas of the right age in the 1901
as is Ethel the only one of her age. The contact point is a Mr Law of Pokesdown
(which is in Hants).
The family:
Thomas 28y 9m Railways non immigrant to Carricoco, New Mexico
Ethel 29y 8m wife
Wm. 2y 1m child
Arthur 1y 2m child
The ship is the 'S.S.Philadelphia' which sailed from Southampton 18 September
1909 arriving at New York the 25th
Thanks,
John
