Hello John,
I had a more detailed look at the 1891 census and it is time to own up
to a mistake. The "Erland Chant" I saw is listed as an 8 month son of
the mystery Charles Chant below. They are living at North Street,
Bridgwater, Charles as a postman. Is it possible that Charles is the
eldest child of Henry Chant ? The 1891 census does not give any more
hard clues as to his origins. You have probably already checked the 1881
census for him, as you know it probably leads to more questions as
opposed to giving answers. For those listers not in the know he is at:
Amelia SQUIBBS Head W Female 75 Bridgwater, Somerset,
England
Charles F. CHANT G Son Male 13 Bridgwater, Somerset,
England Scholar
Sarah Maria JEFFERY Lodger U Female 43 Somerset, England
Dwelling 89 Wellington Road
Census Place Bridgewater, Somerset, England
I am hoping to have access to the 1871 census for Somerset
soonish.....so hopefully that will finally clear up matters.
The search engine for the 1891 census I use clearly shows Erland as
opposed to Edward. I then checked the original document and it does say
Erland and not Edward. Given the possible "name" connection is there
some link with Charles and the other Bridgwater family ? Have you seen
the original 1901 census ? Is it clearly marked Edward ?
As for Alfred and his son Hubert, well the Ernest H Chant listed on the
1891 census aged 1 yr old is clearly the boy. They are living on Church
street, Bridgwater, two dwellings from Alfred's parents. I feel quite
silly that I did'nt pick this up first time around. From the 1901 census
it looks as if Alfred only had the one child.
Was the other brother Francis Chant married with family by 1901 ?
Regards,
Sean

Hi Sean,
I think there are two families here.
32018843 1337731 Chant Harry 61 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater Saw Mill Proprietor 2284/036
32018844 1337731 Chant Jane 61 Somerset Nether Stowey Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/036
32018845 1337731 Chant Alfred 37 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater Assistant Inspector Of Nuisance 2284/036
32018846 1337731 Chant Annie 40 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/036
32018847 1337731 Chant Hubert 11 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/036
32022862 1337895 Chant Charles 33 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater Civil Service Post Office Clerk 2284/118
32022863 1337895 Chant Bessie 33 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/118
32022864 1337895 Chant Edward 10 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/118
32022865 1337895 Chant Charles 9 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/118
32022866 1337895 Chant Mildred 5 Somerset Bridgwater Somerset
Bridgwater 2284/118
The first is Harry, his son and grandson, who I have, shown as Hubert.
(In fact I can't find an Erland Chant in either the 1881 or 1901
censuses: he
comes from the Gordon Beavington transcription of the 1851 which I have
just
checked again. I have the .jpg copies that Gordon did as well but can't
find a
copy of that sheet of the census. It may be so bad that he didn't send
it
out. I am pleased that you found that one existed in 1891: I shall have
to wade
through my copy of the pages of that and have a look at him!)
The second family, and the one with the 10 year old Edward, I have not
fitted
in anywhere yet.
I think the description of Alfred's job is just 'tongue in cheek' and
that
the senior inspector of nuisance, if entered would have been his wife:
the
nuisance being Hubert!
Cheers,
John
