Hello Beryl and list
I am posting this to the list to hopefully clear some
misconceptions. Robert born 1700 is NOT a child of
Thomas b 1665 and Mary b1669.
I have the details of the West Chinnock Parish entry
which shows Robert b 1700 The son of Mary Chant. No
father was listed. Any secondary sources people come
across stating anything different are WRONG.
It has only been suggested that a Thomas in West
Chinnock around that time is likely to be Robert's
father. Please note this Thomas is not the same one
that was in Stoke Sub Hamden. It was another person
altogether. Nothing much is known about him or if
he really existed so at the moment the furthest you
can go back is Robert b 1700 baptised in West
Chinnock the son of Mary Chant.
People keep sending me their family line info stating
Robert b 1700 is the son of Thomas 1665 and Mary 1669
but they married in 1707. Also why would they name
another son Robert in 1719 if they had a son born
1700 who was still alive. Obviously somepeolpe are
making a guess and the result is wrong info floating
around for years.
Please note a lot of IGI info is submitted by people
who thought they were descendants of those listed.
Often you will see a relative mentioned in entries.
Not a relative in the past but a 20th century relative
claiming to be related to the person in the entry.
Some Parish info was transcribed as well but as the
IGI was done in the days of handwritting
transcriptions
there are many errors. The IGI is a good starting tool
only. Ancestral File the same. Original Parish records
need to be checked. Especially as the IGI has no death
entries and often I hear about people who have gone
tracing a supposed ancestor that turns out upon
checking burial entries to have died as a child
leaving no descendants. Also baptisms did not only
occur when they were a child. Some original parish
entries when checked show that the person was very
old in those days being 60, 70, 80 etc and they got
baptised because they were ill before they died.
Most IGI entries are Baptisms, not births and so
could have occurred months or years later in some
cases. People take care of your assumptions and
please check original source records if you can.
You will be surprised by the extra detail some
Parish Books had. It is good practice to state
the source of where info you have came from.
Than the person looking at it or recieving it
can ascertain it's validity and accuracy.
Sources could include :
Ancestral file (Chant entries by Colin and Owen
Whitehead have many errors)
IGI (State year of IGI or online etc as 1988 and 1992
fiche entries have differences, corrections additions
etc).
Gedcom from possible relative. Only as accurate as the
info they have researched and correctly transcribed
themselves or recieved from others.
Listing on a Website (Same as for GEDCOM).
Lookup someone did for you (Same as for GEDCOM).
Parish Transcription on fiche at a FHS or Genealogical
Society.
Private transcription.
Monumental Inscription.
Microfilm of original Parish Registers.
A Book ( Debrett's and Burke's Peerage are bad
sources)
These books often had entries from wealthy merchant
families trying to say they were descended from Royal
or blueblood lines. Many have been shown to be
completely fabricated family trees) So referencing
your sources is very important.
Try the old Chinese Whispers game. The same happens
for family histories a lot more than people are aware
of or even considered. Now that I have most of you
doubt that any of your information is correct at all.
Have a good day and happy hunting <:-}}>

Michael - Thank you for your message.
Just for my own information I would like to know
where on the IGI or
elsewhere is there mention of Robert born 1700 as
being a child of Thomas
(1665) and Mary Virgin (1669), or did you have to do
a personal search. I
have a good rundown from the other son Thomas (1710)
You sent me a message 13/12/2000 about the three
Robert Chants I asked
about. Though I am defnitely from 1700, I would
like some information on
the three of them back from 1700, 1719 and 1710 if
you have it please.
I am in the process of connecting the 1719 Robert (I
hope).
Beryl
