The Introduction that follows has been on most of my Regional lists
for a while. It seems to reduce confusion on the list so I have
reformated the Chant List Mode intro. Digest will be similar and completed
in a day or two. I welcome suggestions about anything
people feel should be added. regards Michael Cheeseman.
Welcome to the CHANT surname mailing list! My name is Michael
Cheeseman and I am the list administrator for CHANT-L. This
list is for those doing personnel research on the Chant surname
or have connecting branches to the Chant Surname.
to send a message the address is:
CHANT-L(a)ROOTSWEB.COM
You are currently subscribed in "list mode", which
means that you will receive every posting made to
CHANT-L as a separate e-mail.
Why not start off by introducing yourself - telling us
who you are, where you live (state/county & country),
what you do (retired / still working) and what your
genealogical interests are for the Chant family Surname.
You may well find that you already have a 'cousin'here.
I hope you find the netiquette information below helpful:
1) SUBJECT HEADINGS
Please remember that informative subject headings are
more likely to bring informative replies. A lot of
people subscribe in digest mode and because of the
volume of mail they receive, use the subject line to
decide if they read the message or delete it without
looking. Now while using all capital letters is
considered as SHOUTING in Netiquette, wherever
possible, please use CAPITAL LETTERS for surnames -
that's right shout them out!
2) FLAMING
Flaming will not be tolerated. If you don't like
something that is posted, either hit the delete key
or contact me off list. Not through the list.
3) PERSONAL MAIL & CHATTING
If you have a personal message (non Chant relevant
reply to question such as what the weather is like
in Africa at the moment) for the sender, please send
it to their E-mail address, NOT the list server address.
Any mail sent to CHANT-L will automatically be sent to
everyone on the list.
4) ATTACHMENTS TO FILES
Please DO NOT intentionally send attachments with list
mail. These will be blocked by RootsWeb and returned
to you. These can harbour Viruses so will be blocked.
5) USE PLAIN TEXT FOR MESSAGES
RootsWeb servers automatically block and return e-mail
in HTML and similar formats also to prevent Virus attack.
Please use plain text mode. This reduces the size of the
message without reducing the content. If You are unaware,
RootsWeb hosts over 20,000 mailing lists (at January 2001)
so it's available server space is very important to other
lists.
6) REPLYING IN DIGEST MODE
Please remember to a) cut out the text of all the
messages which are not relevant to your reply (above
and below it), and b) change the
"Re: CHANT-D Digest V00 # ..." subject to something
more meaningful ( half the subscribers use List
Mode, and won't know to what you are referring to)
7) ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
Please acknowledge replies to your queries either on
the list. This is common courtesy and the feedback to
others who have spent time and energy on your behalf
encourages them and others to continue.
8) AND LASTLY
Do not impose any other rules or conditions, expressed
or implied elsewhere, upon this list. Rules of other
forums may not necessarily apply here. Do not try to
regulate this list. If you do not like the way someone
formats their queries or responses, or the content of
their subject titles, take it up with me, NOT via the
list. The list is for Genealogy and History purposes
relating to the surname CHANT.
The directions on how to change to digest mode are
given below. The following list of items are
included in this mail. Please keep this mail for
future reference.
1. HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE
2. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE
3. CHANGING TO MAIL MODE
4. CHANGING TO NO-MAIL MODE
5. POSTING MESSAGES
6. FLAMING AND SPAMMING RULES
7. HOW TO CONTACT THE LIST OWNER
1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to
CHANT-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
that contains (in the body of the message) the command
unsubscribe
and no additional text.
2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or
you'd not be getting this message. But for future
reference (for instance, if your subscription is
cancelled for whatever reason and you want to
resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to
CHANT-L-request(a)rootsweb.com.
3. How to change to digest mode (several postings
are combined and sent to you together as a single
large message). There are two steps. First, send
the command "unsubscribe" to
CHANT-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command
"subscribe" to CHANT-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
to start receiving digests.
4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal
NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the
directions above and unsubscribe when you want the
messages to stop, and then when you want them to start
again, simply subscribe again.
5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on
the mailing list receives it, just send it to
CHANT-L(a)rootsweb.com.
It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail
and digest mode. You don't need to send it
explicitly to both.
6. Flaming and spamming:
Flaming, or sending a nasty message to someone
because you didn't like what they said is OFF
LIMITS on this page. If I see that this is
happening, you will be immediately unsubscribed
from the list. I firmly believe in the DELETE key,
if you don't like something, delete it and keep
your comments to yourself.
Spamming to this list is not allowed. I don't mind
people "advertising" their web pages as long as it
is not in excess. Spammers will be immediately
unsubscribed.
7. To contact the administrator of this mailing list,
send mail to CHANT-admin(a)rootsweb.com.
For your verification, a transcript of the original
subscription request is included below.
I hope you enjoy your stay with us and remember I am
here to help. Once again, welcome.
