Dear Michael
Firstly may I please say that I found your message in the Chant digest
number 10 rather abrupt and uncalled for. I know you are the list owner but
surely this is not in the spirit of family research.
Perhaps I could also offer a suggestion as to why some subscribers may not
have submitted anything to the list. This is the only list I subscribe to
where a great deal of the input appears to be listings of personal history
lines and I think a large number of people are reluctant to put this on a
list for fear that someone takes this research as their own with no credit
to the large commitment of time and money that the original researcher has
undertaken. I personally feel that basic names ,dates and places are
sufficient and that if someone else feels they have a connection they will
contact me (or vice versa). I do not remember any mention of a data base
being created which I assume from your answers to the list is the case, and
if so do you give credit to the people who have provided you with that
information? I feel a data base would be good but credit should go where it
is due and submitters should be aware or perhaps give permission that their
information is going to be added to this base. I belong to another one name
list where a data base has been created and no personal research is given
out. If it looks there is a common link, permission is sought from the
would be contact to pass on their name and contact point to the original
enquirer , and it is then up to the two individuals to take the contact from
there.
I was going to write and say how much I agreed with your comments on digest
number 6 re knocking square pegs into round holes. As you said the IGI
index should only be used as a guide and the only way is to search the
parish registers oneself - for me the pleasure I get from my family research
is the thrill of seeing my family events filmed from a parish register
several hundred years old and being able to put another piece in the jigsaw.
Anyway to my brick wall -
My Great great grandparents were Samuel Chant (born Odcombe 1825) and Emma
Allen ( born Compton Durville South Petherton 1818) who were married in
1844 and who moved to Sydenham in Kent in 1851.
Samuels parents were Charles Chant and Sarah Eglon. This is where my Chant
problems occur.
Odcombe parish register show Charles baptism in 1787 with parents as John
and Sarah - there are no other baptisms of children to John and Sarah but
children either side in 1785 1790 and 1792 to a John and Betty. There is no
marriage of a John and Sarah but a marriage of a John and Betty Britt in
1784. I would like to think I would be safe in assuming that this notation
of mothers name as Sarah as being a clerical error but my next problem
occurs when I look for John and Bettys baptisms. I cannot find a baptism
for my John Chant in Odcombe around the appropriate time slot and there is
not a baptism of a Betty Britt but there is one for a Sarah Britt in 1755.
My main question for this list does anyone in surrounding parishes have an
odd John Chant in their family listings baptised around 1755/60 who didnt
marry in that parish and could possible be mine?
If anyone is researching Odcombe Chants and especially descended from John
and Betty (Britt) I would love to hear from you.
Good researching
