On 1 June Cathy Pinner e-mailed Michael Cheeseman & myself regarding Augusta
Chant who ran a school in Midsomer Norton.
Augusta Chant was one of seven children born to George Chant and Harriett of
Sherborne. As you no doubt have already noted, they were,
Emily Chant bapt 25 March 1837 Haydon,
John Chant bapt 28 Dec 1840 Holwell,
Ann Chant bapt 25 Dec 1843, Holwell,
Mary Chant born 1846 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
John Chant born 1849 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
Augusta Chant born 1853 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
Helena Chant born 1853 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell.
Note that Augusta and Helena were twins and that there were no baptisms in
Holwell between 1843 and 1857. Furthermore the family was nowhere to be
found in Dorset during that period and was probably 'over the border' in
Somerset. It would be worth having SKS search the Somerset 1851 Census for
them.
The father George Chant was baptised in Sherborne 11 Jan 1816 the Son of
James Chant and Mary (Cevil). The marriage of George Chant to Harriett has
not been found yet but was probably 1837 at Haydon.
James Chant wasbaptised 14 August 1787 in Sherborne, the Son of George Chant
& Mary (Rogers). James was a younger brother of George Chant bapt 14 August
1779 and who was Michael Cheeseman's ancestor.

Antony Nailer.
