Michael Cheeseman wrote,
GEORGE CHANT born at Nether Compton about 1745 and
who married MARY ROGERS at Sherborne 17 January 1743/4.
Also who was William and Mary who had children
from 1761. Who was James and Sarah circa 1764
Who was Susannah Chant married 1769. George and Mary
of my line named a daughter Susanna in 1777. Was
Susannah who married in Sherborne in 1769 his sister?
And the Mary Chant buried 1764 and William Chant
Senior buried 1766 were not the couple who had their
children 1761-1767. Still some missing pieces.
I also have George marrying Elizabeth Noakes on 1799 date but at
Castleton from a cousin who visited the DRO earlier this year.
Not sure how you got George Chant b 1768/9 to now what
you have said "I have been looking for a baptism of
George Chant around 1748 near Bradford Abbas with no
luck. This morning I surfed the
FamilySearch.org and
found George Chant son of Robert Chant & Elizabeth
baptised 2 November 1746 West Chinnock". Bit of a
difference here. How did you and Beryl arrive at
1768 earlier. Age at Burial?

My response,
Sorry but I got this a bit screwed. It should read;-
GEORGE CHANT was born about 1745, he married MARY ROGERS in Sherborne on 24
June 1765, she was baptised in SHERBORNE 17 January 1743/4. His parish was
stated as Nether Compton in the marriage entry.
This couple then had Jane in 1767, William in 1771, Sarah in 1773, Susanna
in 1777, George in 1779, Samuel in 1782, and James in 1787.
Susanna ( 1777) married William Loader of Lillington, in Sherborne 17
February 1799.
The Parish Register of Sherborne lists GEORGE CHANT of Nether Compton and
ELIZABETH NOAKE of this Parish married 15 December 1799. I do not care what
your cousin saw, this is what is in the Sherborne Register. You will also
note that there is no Parish in the 1851 Census of Dorset with a surname
NOAKES.
I have found two couples in Sherborne, who look like the originators of the
Sherborne lines. WILLIAM CHANT who married in 1729, and THOMAS CHANT who
married in 1733.
27 years later a sequence of marriages occur,
THOMAS CHANT married DEBORAH TRENCH 25 December 1760.
WILLIAM CHANT married MARY JEANS 3 February 1761.
GEORGE CHANT married MARY ROGERS 24 June 1765.
MARY CHANT married JAMES PEDDING 17 October 1768.
SUSANNA CHANT married THOMAS DAWE 16 July 1769.
These five Chants were probably brothers & sisters, or cousins. The George
Chant and Mary Rogers are the precursors of your line, and George would have
been born about 1746.
My search of
FamilySearch.org revealed the following children baptised in
West Chinnock the sons and daughters of ROBERT CHANT & ELIZABETH.
THOMAS CHANT baptised 25 June 1738.
ROBERT CHANT baptised 12 Feb 1740.
MARY CHANT baptised 22 Oct 1744, died before 1751.
GEORGE CHANT baptised 2 Nov 1746.
MARY CHANT baptised 25 Aug 1751.
WILLIAM CHANT baptised 4 Nov 1753.
ELIZABETH CHANT baptised 9 Oct 1757.
It is possible that Thomas, George, and Mary correspond to those married in
Sherborne between 1760 and 1770 but first it is necessary to search the
Sherborne baptism/burial register 1727 to 1759 so that we can properly form
the earlier trees.
The Bradford Abbas line has NOT been solved, it was early in the morning
when I wrote the e-mail and I got a bit confused. Sorry about that. GEORGE
CHANT of that line was buried April 1829 aged 61 years which puts his birth
date as 1768. He married ELIZABETH ??? somewhere between his 21st birthday
in 1789 and the arrival of their first child in 1794.

Antony Nailer.
