Beryl -
No-one seems to have answered your question
about the location of Bishop's Caundle (note the
"n" in the name!), or if they have, I have failed to spot
their reply.
The village is about 5 & one -half miles
SE of Sherborne, on the A.3030 Sherborne-Blandford road.
It is the largest of the 4 surviving Caundle villages
- the others being Caundle Marsh, Stourton Caundle &
Purse Caundle. Caundle Wake, Caundle Pyle & some
other places no longer seems to exist under names
that include the word 'Caundle'.
What that word means has been much disputed,
as the places to which it has been at various times
attached seem to have no common denominator
- certainly they are, or were, *not* all on the Caundle
Brook, though some old guide-books suggest this.
E. Ekwall suggested that Caundle might be an old
name for a hill. The Swedish author of "The Place
Names of Dorset", Dr. Anton Fagersten, was
non-committal on this.
Not being an expert myself, I can offer no other
explanation!
