Hello Listers,
Michael asked me to look-up Charles Chant, aged 31 born Sherborne,
living at Sherborne on the 1871 census. As Michael and other listers
will know there has been some discussion and confusion regarding a host
of Charles Chant's at Sherborne in previous postings.
Anyhow here goes:
Hound Street; Sherborne:
Charles Chant, Head aged 31, unmarried, labourer, born Sherborne.
Jane Everett, lodger, unmarried aged 49, glover, born Holnest Dorset.
Given the age this might be Charles baptised 29th May 1839 at Sherborne,
son of Samuel and Mary Chant. This is the only Charles Chant born at
Sherborne in this age range. Is his parents Samuel Chant and Mary
Morris, married at Sherborne 12th July 1829.
I have a Charles Chant aged 12, servant at Sherborne, born Sherborne on
the 1851 census. This also seems to be him. However I do not have
"household" details of that census which would clear up if he was the
son of Samuel and Mary. There is a 49 yr old Samuel on the 1851 census
and a 50 yr old Mary who might be his parents.
It appears as if Charles married his lodger Jane Everitt after 1871 as
on the 1881 census they are listed;
Church Close, Sherborne:
Charles Chant, Head aged 44, labourer, born Sherborne
Jane Chant, wife aged 53 born Holnest
On the 1901 census they are still at Sherborne:
Hound Street Cottage;
Charles Chant, head aged 69, labourer, born Sherborne
Jane Chant, wife aged 73, born Holnest
It looks as if Charles and Jane did not have children.
I know that the ages of both Charles and Jane appear to be quite fluid,
however they close enough to be sure. Given this, there is every chance
that the following death index is "our" Jane Chant: aged 80 March 1910
5a 227

Sean
