Hello Listers,
John asked me to do the following look-up.
I have a feeling that I have posted information on this family before, I
think via Percy Chant (see 1881 census below).....anyhow here goes:

Hi Sean,
I like to look out for Essex CHANTs although they won't be mine. Living
in the county I am nearer the Record Office than any of our other
listers and can, perhaps, steal a march on their Essex requirements.
Can you tell me about this chap's family please? South Ockendon is not
too far away from West Horndon where Jacqueline Douglas's Chants seem
to have entered the county.
Thanks,
John

On the 1891 census the family looked like this:
Howe Hill; Watlington, Oxon:
James Chant, Head aged 52, retired coachman, born Chichester, Sussex
Mary A Chant, wife aged 51, born Romford Essex
James F Chant, son aged 28, clerk, born Romford Essex
Bertha Chant, aged 19, born Middlesex St George Hanover Sqr.
Other son Frank Chant, by now 26 was still single boarding in Islington.
Occupation clerk
No sign of other children as yet.
On the 1901 census the family looked like this:
James Snr and wife Mary, now 62 and 61 were still living at Watlington,
Oxon, however he taken his hand to poultry farming. All their children
had flown the coop, please excuse the awful pun !
On first look I can't locate James F Chant on the 1901 census. However
Frank Chant, now 36 is still a single boarder, now in Stoke Newington.
Can anyone add anything extra or new to this ?
Regards,
Sean
