Hello Listers,
James Wallace Chant of Chatham, Kent, died 25/12/1885, a brewers clerk,
left £100 Ex's was Frederick George Chant the brother.
Deaths Dec 1885
Chant James William 22 Medway 2a 339
I'm not sure which is correct here, Wallace or William ? After looking
at the census records he certianly had a middle initial of W but they do
not indicate what it stands for.
Anyhow it looks as though James and his brother Frederick were born in
Chatham, Kent. On the 1881 census James is working as a "teacher in a
British School" aged only 17. His mother Annie also born Kent had
married to a James Pengilly. Her first husband, and father to the the
two boys was James Chant b. c. 1828 at Falmouth, Cornwall. Looks as
though he died at some stage between 1861 and 1871. On the 1861 census
at Chatham he is listed as a "ropemaker". James's own father was a
Thomas Chat, listed on the 1851 and 1841 census at Falmouth born during
the late 1790's in Somersetshire. The 1851 does not indicate where
exactly. He is listed as a fisherman on the 1851 and a boatman on the
1841. Does anyone know where he might originate in Somerset ?
Does anyone have anything on Frederick George Chant ? If not I will
follow him through on later records
On the Falmouth family, James born 1828 had a number of siblings. has
anyone looked at this family ?
Regards,
Sean
