Hello Hilary,
Thanks for the detailed reply. It fills in a lot of gaps. I have also
had trouble finding James on the 1841 census. There is a James born 1823
in Somerset living at Ashill, Somerset as a baker. There is no other
members of the Chant family there. It just a stab in the dark. As for
his daughter Rebecca I can't find a marriage which might fit, also I
can't find her on the 1901 census. However I did find the following
death entry which is interesting given Rebecca's Sussex background, and
the fact she was there on the 1901 census. The age fits very well. Can
anyone either verify or perhaps eliminate this entry ?

Hello Listers
Having watched with interest the renewed discussions on the Chant
family at last I can lay claim to one! James Chant is my gggrandfather
and apart from a brief time as a grocer in Taunton was "in service"
for the rest of his life, muc of it for an elderly spinster Charlotte
Leycester in Wilton Crescent she died aged 94 in 1893. I have a lot of
information on his family and descendants , much of it still waiting to
be sorted, as I have had little time for family history research
recently and when I have had time have been concentrating on another
branch of my family. Very briefly James was one of 7 children of James
Chant and Mary Manning of Martock baptised 12th Jan 1823. Haven't
traced where he was in 1841 but he was the grocer in 1851. His son
Thomas, my gggrandfather, was born in Taunton in 1852 and another son,
James in 1853 in Horsington. There were 2 more children but they died
in 1864, as did their mother Elizabeth, in Langport where Elizabeth's
family
lived. The first I knew of Rebecca was a mention of her in Thomas
Chant's will - he had been paying her an annuity - I have not traced
what happened to their daughter Annie - yet! In 1901 James was in a
lodging house in Herne Bay with his sister Sarah Ralph he died in July
of that year at his daughter Emma's house in Mill Hill, Hampstead of
senility so I have wondered if the family was sharing his care! Sarah
died of senile decay in Sep 1902 in Huish Episcopi Langport. My
grandfather, son of Thomas, had a summer house in Herne Bay so I have
wondered if the connection went back to Thomas - yet to be explored.
Re 1901 census Harriet Claxton was also a visitor and I wondered if she
and Rebecca were sisters as both were born in Eartham, Sussex not far
from Prior's Lea where they were visitors of Thamas Bryer & family, he
was a farmer.
Going back to James Chant and Mary Manning they were married in 1815
in Martock. All my research and evidence points to him being the James
Chant who was born 7 Mar 1779 bapt 14 Mar son of Thomas and Mary. So I
was somewhat thrown to find that other Chant researchers had this James
Chant married to Ann Taverner in 1794, when he would be 15! but I came
across a website which had a transcription of Stoke baptisms 1720-1812,
www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/StokeSubHamdon/BapStH_C.html , and I
noticed a James Channt bap 20 Jul 1771 which I had obviously missed
when studying the parish registers on a visit to Somerset record office
in Taunton, there was also a Mary Channt 1770 d of Thomas and Mary and
a Martha and Sarah Channt b 1770 ds of Robert and Susannah I have
not had an opportunity to recheck the parish registers yet but this
would be a more likely candidate to be Ann Taverner's husband as he
would have been at least 23. There is also a James Chant buried Stoke
in
1814 aged 50 who could possibly be him too.
This has whetted my appetite to get back to my research but it is our
summer here and gardening and sailing have taken over. Only have time
today because I have injured my foot and have to spend a few days
resting it!
Keep up the good work

Thanks John,
I had noticed on the 1871 census James as a grocer at Taunton with
Elizabeth and Emma. I presume then that Elizabeth died during the
1860's ?
Is is worth looking at the children from that marriage ?
I also noticed a death for a 78 yr old James Sep Qtr 1901 at Hamspead.
Does this sound like him ?
