In 1994 I was given the name of a Sue Overton in Langport, Somerset who
had done some research on the Chant line. In her letter to me she
states: "My involvment with the Chant family research came about through
my very good friend Jean McDonald who lives in Sudney, Australia. ...
Jean is descended from Mary Chant, bp 1808 at W. Chinnock, the daughter
of James and Mary Chant (nee Mudford.) " She says she has a fair amount
of information on the Chant families of South Somerset but it is "patchy"
as she was searching for her friend. She says: "The only George Chant
b. c. 1804 I have on record if George William Chant bap. 25 May 1804 on
Guernsey in the Channel Islands. He was the son of George and Thamar
Chant. Thamar had been a widow with the surname Hopkins when she met
George but her maiden name was Musten(various spellings!) George and
Thamar had a number of children, some born on the Channel Islands and
some born in West Chinnock and one of the branches of the Chant family in
Australia descends from this couple." She continues on about my
research. Beryl
