Greetings list
Well I kep't saying this looked familiar every
time the Haydon line was mentioned. Think I
have solved it. The following members and likely
cousins may accept or reject as their probable
line.
Sherron Biddle, Richard Rogers, Victoria Fisher
and Kenneth who is not on the list.
Piddletown in Dorset is now known as Puddletown
changed for a visit by Queen Victoria so the story
goes.
John Chant born circa 1767. Where is not yet known.
Hopefully in Dorset but could be Somersetshire
or even Wiltshire?
Sometime before 1787 (maybe) John Chant/Chaunt
married Mary Davis
They had their children baptised at Piddletown.
1) James Chant baptised 8th of April 1787
2) Susanna Chaunt in January 1789.
This baptism may have been a private one. Or
a death record should be searched for.
3) Susanna Chant was baptised 20 Feb 1791.
4) George Chant 24 February 1793
5) Mary Chant born 1st March 1795
Christened 4th June 1795
Death 11th October 1795
6) Charles Chant born 12th June 1796
Christened 10th July 1796
7) Peggy Chant born 22nd November 1797
Christened 25th of December 1797
8) Harriot (male) Chant born 20th June 1800
Christened 20th July 1800
9) William Chant born 4th September 1802
Christened 19th September 1802
10) Ann Chant born 10th November 1804
Christened 1804
Death 1st March 1805
No. 4 George Chant b 1793 married Mary ? and
had a daughter Mary Chant christened 31 March
1818 at Piddletown.
Then George with (new wife or Same wife?) now
called Mirium ? had Peggy Chant christened
30th December 1821. Followed by Jane Chant christened
11th August 1823.
George's older brother
No. 1 James Chant b 1787 married Charlotte GARTEL
b.July 8, 1792 from Haydon, Dorset.They married
Dec 21, 1813 in Haydon. This could be where
confusion has occurred looking for a Charlotte
Bateman.
The Vital Records Index for the British Isles has
George Chant born in 1814 in Dorset to James Chant
and Charlotte (no last name). He was christened
on October 30, 1814 in Haydon, Dorset.
James Chant b 1787 possibly d around 1814--gored
by a bull according to oral history. Though son
George b 1814 is said to have had sisters
according to oral tradition?
George's Death Certificate in 1892 when he died
February 01, 1892 states James Chant father,
mother Charlotte Bateman. Charlotte had remarried
at least once after the death of James. Misplaced
the name somewhere. Their could have been a third
marriage to someone named Bateman.

John Chant b: 1849, Holwell By Sherborne
Helena Chant b: 1854, Holwell By Sherborne
Augusta Chant b: 1854, Holwell By Sherborne
Mary, John, Helena and Augusta were all baptised
on the 28 Jun 1857.
Other similar entries sent in were :
Emily Chant bapt 25 March 1837 Haydon,
John Chant bapt 28 Dec 1840 Holwell,
Ann Chant bapt 25 Dec 1843, Holwell,
Mary Chant born 1846 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
John Chant born 1849 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
Augusta Chant born 1853 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell,
Helena Chant born 1853 bapt 28 June 1857, Holwell.
Note that Augusta and Helena were twins and that
there were no Chant baptisms in Holwell between
1843 and 1857. Family tradition states 15 children
born by Harriet but only 7 survived.
George and Harriet left with a group of people from
Yoevil, Somerset to Minnesota in 1873 and took their
children with them. James was a ship captain and
travelled far and wide, some of his kids were born
on ship. So we need to find out these!
Emily married the Rev George Rodgers who was the
leader of the several hundred families who left
Yeovil and came to Minnesota. I have other
information also. Richard Rogers states.
Cousin Kenneth said to have supporting evidence
in documents as well.
Oral history from Harriet to one of her daughters
claims 15 children of which only 7 survived to
Adulthood. It is likely upon the death of one
child and the birth of the next that the second
child is given the same name of the dead one.
This has been found to be very common in the past
so care on all Chant lines should be taken.
Without death/burial details of the time you
could be listing a dead Uncle or Aunt as your
ancestor.
