Subject: [CHANT] George Chant b. 1801 m. Mary Hallett
Anthony Nailor had been looking for a baptism of
George Chant around 1748 near Bradford Abbas with
no luck. He surfed the
FamilySearch.org and found
George Chant son of Robert Chant & Elizabeth
baptised 2 November 1746 West Chinnock and thought
this may be the right one.
He thought this has to be the correct parents because
it was common practice to name one or two of your
children the same as the grandparents, which George
and Elizabeth did ? in 1803 and 1806.
George & Elizabeth Chant had 6 known children from
1794 to 1809 at Bradford Abbas. George was buried
23 April 1829 at Bradford Abbas and presumed born
about 1768,
1) The baptism of Hannah Chant b ? and Ch. in 9 Nov
1794 to George & Betty is the same couple as George &
Elizabeth, there are no other candidates. This
suggests the marriage of George and Elizabeth to
between his 21st? birthday in 1789 and the birth of
the first child by 1794. I expect that the marriage
would be in or around West Chinnock. With them
regularly taking their family to visit the
grandparents is how their son George (1801) met and
married Mary Hallett of West Chinnock between 1832 and
1836.

No. 116. Date: 28 May 1860. John Vernon, 28, bachelor,
excavator, res.
Sherborne. Father George Vernon. Mary Elizabeth Chant,
21, spinster, res.
Sherborne; father George Chant. Wit. by Charles and
Mary Chant.
Certificate from Somserset House, London, 2 Jan. 1972
(obtained by a
relative). Subsequent census records show them
living next door to
George Chant in Bradford Abbas. John Vernon came
to USA around 1871;
his wife and six children followed him about 2 years
later. Family
rumor has it that John was poaching; was caught at it;
hit a bobby and
left the country in haste. Also family story that
when Mary Elizabeth
was leaving England for the US, with the six children,
at the last moment
Thomas was missing. She had to go on without him. A
small boat came out
as they were leaving harbor with said Thomas on it.
Bet he got a good
spanking!
I am now looking for a George Chant m. to an Elizabeth
b. 1765.
Maybe IGI entry?
