G'day.
Anybody out there.
Well, I finally have heard back from David Chant.
He has collected info on and off about his Chant
family and from contacts since 1952.
His line is from Robert b 1700 of West Chinnock.
He informs me that though Robert's mother Mary was
only listed on the Parish Register, brothers Joseph
b 1686 and Jerimiah b 1703 had Thomas and Mary
against their names. Ann b 1707 also is listed by
him as their daughter.
He has Thomas Chant who married a Mary (Surname
unknown) living in West Chinnock by 1686. He, like
many, thought Thomas b 1665 was the one. As he
would have been old enough, it is possible this is
the case of a first marriage. Then Thomas married
2nd Mary Virgin in 1707. Ann Chant born 1707
daughter of either couple. But caution should be
taken on assuming this as certain.
The problem is that the Stoke Sub Hamden Parish
register has a gap from 1679-1740. Making it
difficult to know what became of the Chant baptisms,
marriages and burials there.
Anyway Robert married Sistely or Cecily? Having
Children Brigard 1722, John 1724, Robert b 1725,
John b 1727, Thomas 1730, Brigard 1732, Betty 1733,
Thomas 1735 and William 1738.
Son Robert b 1725 married Susannah Tett in 1760
Children Jacob b 1761, Mary 1762, Sarah 1763,
Susannah b 1766, Elizabeth b 1768, Sarah 1770,
Martha b 1770, Robert b 1773, Elenor 1774,
William b 1776 and Martha b 1779.
Son John b 1737 became a Thatcher and married
Dianah (Templeman?). Children Dianah 1754, John
1756, Robert b 1756, Joseph b 1758, Dianah b 1762,
Cecily b 1765, George b 1767, Joseph b 1769 and Job
b 1777.
Son William b 1738 married Ann Lane 1759. Children
unknown.
What became of Brigard 1732, Betty 1733 and
Thomas 1735 is unknown.
Back to John b 1737. His son John b 1756 married
1777 Jane Ford b 1755. This is one of our main
research lines from this couple.
I will be contacting David again and overtime
hope to gain more of some 82 pages he says he has
written by hand on old parchment style paper using
caligraphy style script.
He has also done some hand drawn maps which make
it easy to follow the possible Chant migrations
of Somerset. David formerly an actor in theatre
and TV 1960-1972 from 1992 has been teaching as
head of Arts and Crafts, researching his other
family lines heavily, doing his own art and
ceramic work. So keeping very busy.
Well, have the Wiltshire lines or anyone else
got any pedigrees they would like to share.
Regards
