Hi Beryl, Keith and all on list
George b 1767 is more likely to be the one for
Keith but I cannot be certain. Unless all Parishes
are checked and other records such as settlement
certificates etc we cannot be 100% positive on any
line. Even David's or mine.
Yeovil which has many Chants as I understand has
not been mentioned much on the list at all. Also
no doubt other Parishes exist which have Chant
entries we have not as yet found or been posted
to the list.
David Chant after 48 years has not been able to
find out how all lines connect, But hopefully
with so many of us looking new info will come
to light as no one individual could find it all.
The Chaunt family starts at Ham Hill circa 1506
Obcombe Parish but entries break in 1540's and the
first next clues are the Stoke sub Hamden entry
in 1584. Some may have seen Owen Whitehead from
Australia produced a Ancestral file as a member
of the LDS religion but the links he has are a
best guess.
LDS Pedigrees and IGI entries should only be used
as a Guide. Parish Registers, Birth, Marriage and
Death Certificates should be consulted as well as
Census records, Tax records, Musters, Army, Militia,
Parish Chest, Manorial Court, Assizes, Land, Rent
and numerious other record sources not only bring
our ancestors lives out but help confirm we have
the right ones as well. Those living near record
Offices in the UK are very lucky.
Spelling errors by those writting documents could
mean Chant spelt Chaunt/Chaunte/Chont/Chante etc.
Remember back then spelling wasn't set. What
became of the various lines is presently the big
mystery. Also later ones from Stoke and West
Chinnock lines have many unfollowed branches. All
need to be found to establish each branch properly.
David wrote to me saying he doesn't think it can be
done as too much is missing. I cannot believe he
has found every document that contains Somerset
Chant entries.
At best we have Robert b 1700, Thomas b 1710,
Robert b 1719 as likely lines. Robert b circa 1575
has early 1600 entries for children (including three
sons)at Stoke then what?
A number of marriages crop up in North Wootten
Dorset 1625 period. Sherborne has some baptisms
in 1654. Henstrindge 1745 period, etc etc.
Like most things the more we find, the more
questions appear. It is going to take more
research to establish more certainty to all
lines including Pamela's 11 generations
and David Chant's pedigree.
One wrong assumption is all it takes and we
follow the wrong branch. Possibly a cousin of
our true ancestor. The further back we go the
more likely it is to make mistakes. Always treat
each find with caution and double and triple check
everything. One seemingly small detail may
send you on a totally different direction.
By all means produce family trees but those placed
on Websites,
Ancestry.com,
FamilyHistory.com
and pedigrees with LDS have errors and these
are passed onto others as accurate info when
they are not. This has caused some confusion
amoung Chant researchers. I hope we can improve
on these earlier attempts.
Doubt exists over Thomas b 1665 who he married
and which are his children. As this is the link
to William Chaunt who married Alice White in 1584
and is claimed by the main Somerset branches. So
a problem exists there also.
For Beryl, your George Chant who had a wife
Elizabeth surname unknown living in Bradford
Abbass, Dorset early 1800 possibly had a child
baptised 1794. Then a Gap till 1800.
we must consider with all lines second and
third marriages were common especially as children
had to be looked after. So men remarried soon after
a wife died of childbirth or disease. Also common is
new wives having the same first name as the earlier
wife. Helful to us now, Not!
I Still have George Chant married Elizabeth Crabbe
at Beamster 1796. Then Elizabeth (maybe this one)
at Melbury Osmond with son John in 1799. This from
Settlement record. Husband missing and dispute
between Parish overseers as to home parish which
should provide Poor Relief. This may be Beryl's
couple. Maybe George and Elizabeth were not married
when Hannah was baptised in 1794.
10% of children born in the 1800's had parents who
were not married. Also not all baptisms in Parish
records were children. I have come across Adults as
old as 74 being baptised. Some Parish registers are
more detailed than other unfortunately
This hobby is like being Sherlock Holmes trying to
peice together the event like a jigsaw puzzle.
Probably why this hobby is so popular.
Well I hope I haven't put anyone off.
Happy Hunting. Seek and ye shall find.

George Grant we are looking for was married
to Elizabeth (from
census records when she lived with our George Grant
of Bradford Abbas).
However, if we are able to take this particular
George out of our
searches we might find the right one. Regards,
Beryl
