Hello Chant Researchers,
Poor Michael C. works so hard trying to inspire Chant research so I though I
would finally respond to his call of weeks ago to state my interests. I seem
to represent the American Chants through a maternal ggmother.
My earliest Chant is probably one John Chant b. abt 1740 definitely with a
son John b. abt 1765 possibly in Brimpton/Brompton, Somerset. John m. Mary
Davis in Puncknowle, Dorset and settled (for a while) in Piddletown where he
submitted a settlement examination. His legal residence seems to have been
Odcombe, but I find no record of him or his family there.
Anyway, John Chant and Mary Davis had
James (b. 8 Apr 1787) m. Charlotte Gartel
Susanna (b. 23 Jan 1789 , d. 27 June 1790)
Susanna (b. 20 Feb. 1791)
George (b. 22 Feb. 1793) m. Miriam Palmer
Mary (b. 1 Mar. 1795)
Charles (b. 12 June 1796)
Peggy (b. 22 Nov. 1797)
Harriot (b. 20 June 1800)
William (b. 4 Sep. 1802)
Ann (b. 10 Nov. 1804)
Sarah (b. 14 Sep 1806)
Charles (b. 19 Nov. 1806)
The first child, James m. Charlotte Gartle d. 2 July 1815 in Haydon,
Dorset.
They had one child: George (b. 30 Oct 1814) who m. Harriet Seymour Mintern.
George and Harriet had:
Thomas (b. ?)
Emily (b. 27 Feb 1838 Haydon Dor. m. George Rodgers)
James (b. 15 Jan 1840, Sherborne, Dor m. Elisabeth Rowe Wills)
John ( b. 28 Dec 1940 Sherborne, Dor
Ann (b. 2 Sep. 24 Yoevil, Dor)
Mary (b. abt 1846)
Laura (b. 1 Apr. 1848)
John (b. abt 1849)
Augusta (b. abt 1855)
Helena (b. abt 1855)
Much of the above two generations came to Minneapolis, Minnesota USA in 1872.
The above James (b. 15 Jan 1840, Sherborne, Dor m. Elisabeth Rowe Wills) had
countless children of their own born in Sherborne, on board his ship (James
was a Capt.) on in Hawley, Minn. He would be my gggranfather.
As Michael C. has already mentioned, my particular Ag Lab Chants moved all
over Dorset and Somerset making a particularly good living catching moles.
But their trail is difficult to pick up.
