Ex's was Charles Robert Chant the brother.
We discussed this family only a week or so ago in regard to Charles
Robert Chant, James's brother who died himself during 1886.
This is the family that John raised, Matthew Chant and Ann Cook of Lincs.
Hi Sean,
Having checked I agree that this James Cook Chant must be the watchmaker
from Brigg and son of Matthew and Ann. It is a pity I hadn't spotted him before
as I have attached the wrong James to Matthew.
The right James is born Caistor 1828 and appears in Linda's list as James
Cook Chant: quite logical given that mother, who is with him at Brigg on the
1861 census was née Cook. He is a visitor in Lowestoft on the 1851 census with
William and Happy Hogg, but shown as a watchmaker. (Yes, it says 'Happy'.)
The wrong James (for whom I have no parents now) was born at Caistor 1829ish
and seems to have been in agriculture all his life. In 1841 he is with
Robert and Mary Taylor in Winterton, Lincs. In 1851 he is unmarried and working as
a farm labourer for Edward Carr in Epworth, Lincs. He marries and produces
the brood I put in Matthew's line, and by 1901 is shown as an employer but
still in farming and still in Epworth.
Sorry if I sent anyone down the wrong road, but there are now two chaps who
need fathers: Matthew and (the wrong) James.
Cheers,
John
