Hi Sean,
Very pleased to see this posting as it is a family I have followed for a
couple of years. I don't know which Stoke-sub-Hamdon Chant family is that of
Thomas Chant 1798-1878 and Elizabeth (Ward) but it seems he was born there to
Thomas Chant and Eleanor Gendal and baptised at St Mary's.
There must be a Stoke/Falmouth connection still to be found as Thomas and
Eleanor were married 12-1-1795 at St Gluvias, Cornwall.
Pure speculation, but there are plenty of precedents: it looks as if Thomas
took Eleanor back to his home village but that her family circumstances
(perhaps pecuniary, perhaps homesickness) meant they moved back to her home
location. Their first child, Eleanor, had been baptised at St Gluvias.
It looks as if James 1828 died in Chatham as FreeBMD has:
Chant James 41 Medway 2a 284 for December quarter 1869. The age fits.
I could not find a James Wallace/James William birth registration to fit.
James looks to have married Annie in Chatham in the March 1857 quarter:
Chant James Medway 2a 368
Annie is not yet named on FreeBMD.
You asked about both Frederick's family and Thomas and Elizabeth's other
children: of these I still lack information about Thomas Chant 1825 who,
strangely, was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, according to the 1851 census and
followed the profession of mariner. For the others I am in touch with some
family members.
Cheers,
John
