Hello Listers,
Many moons ago when the Ellis Island web site was new the name of Laura
Ormiston Chant cropped up. Who was she and where did she fit into the tree?
If you put the name into a search engine like Google you get various results,
among them the extract on this web page about her suffragette beliefs and
inspirational effect on Winston Churchill (to name drop) and friendship with
George Bernard Shaw (to do it again):

The Ellis Island site lists her as a preacher on her entry to the U.S.A. in
1903. It also appears to say that she came from a place called Chantanga in New
Zealand, but I'm not sure about that: it looks a bit tongue in cheek!
There are various references on the Internet, so she was quite well known in
her day. If I have got it correct (and there is no guarantee as I am using
Internet sources without any confirmation having been obtained), she fits into
the family as I show below.
I should be pleased to get any confirmation that anyone has and any comments
which might disprove the way I have constructed the jigsaw, but I hope it is
not 'back to the drawing board'. I particularly want to know which Joseph this
is as he may fit in with my line.
Cheers,
John
