Subject: Noah Chant of Sherborne and his descendents
Hello Listers,
Further to my posting, quite some time ago now on Noah Chant's
(1811-1870) family of Sherborne. Listers might recall there was some
discussion regarding Noah's grandson Wilfred Henry Chant who migrated
to the USA during 1911. I believe I have a few more details on Noah's
other children.
1. On the 1841 census Noah's family are listed as such:
Long Street, Sherborne.
Noah Chant: 30 agricultural labourer
Eliza Chant: 30
Robert Chant: 7
Vivian Chant; 5
Wilfred Chant: 3
Noah Chant: 1
Emily Chant: 1 month
2. On the 1851 census Noah's fami;y are listed as such:
Sherborne:
Noah Chant: 40
Eliza Chant: 41 (born Donyatt, Somerset: some 30 kilometres west of
Sherborne)
Robert Chant: 17
Vivian Chant: 15
Wilfred Chant: 12
Horace Noah: 11
Emily Chant; 9
Eliza Chant: 8
Edward Chant: 6
Henry Chant: 1
At this stage we do not have any details of the family on the 1861 or
1871 census returns. Even though Eliza and and Noah were by now in
their 40's, it is possible that there were other children of the
marriage.
During the intervening period we do know the following:
i) burial of Vivian Chant aged 19 at Sherborne on 16th Feb. 1855
ii) marriage of Wilfred Chant to Sarah Colston c. 1860/61
iii) death of Wilfred Chant aged 31 at Sherborne on 21st Oct 1869
iv) death of Noah Chant Snr aged 59 at Sherborne on 22nd May 1870
By 1881:
v) Son Robert Chant appears to disappear from the records. At this
stage no record of burial, marriage etc. Is possible that he migrated ?
As he does not appear on the 1881 census we must assume either death or
migration
vi) Son Henry Chant does not show on the 1881 census, no burial records
as yet
vii) Daughter Emily Chant does not show up on the 1881 census as such.
She may well have married by then, being aged about 29. No record of
marriage yet.
viii) Son Horace Noah Chant is listed on the 1881 census at Hound
Street, Sherborne aged 41 unmarried working as a general labourer,
living with his sister Elizabeth Chant aged 28 working as a silk
factory worker.
ix) No sign of Noah Snr's wife Eliza Slade on the 1881 census, so one
presumes she died prior to that date.
x) Son Edward Chant interestingly shows up on the 1881 census at
Reigate Rd, Reigate Foreign, Surrey working as a domestic servant.
-Edward Chant Head: 38 born Sherborne
-Sarah Chant: wife: 22 born Perry, Hampshire
-Emma Chant; daughter 9 born Buntingford, Hereford
-Alice M Chant: daughter 7 born Pimlico, Middlesex
-Edward Chant: son 1 male born Pimlico, Middlesex
Of course the age of Edward's wife Sarah at 22 is a worry given the age
of the eldest daughter Emma at 9. Perhaps the daughter's ages were
wrongly transcribed ? At this stage I don't have a marriage date or
index for Edward and Sarah. The 1891 census does shed more light on the
family, although also confirms Sarah's age.
xi) By 1891 census: at 13, Colbeck Mews, Kensington
-Edward Chant 45 born Sherborne, coachman and domestic service
-Sarah Chant 32 born Perrey, Hampshire
-Edward Chant 11, son born Pimlico
-Joseph Chant 9 son born Perrey, Hants
-Ellen Chant 7 daughter born Reigate, Surrey
-Henry Chant 6 son born Reigate, Surrey
-Daniel Chant 5 son born South Kensington
-Edith Chant 2 daughter born South Kensington
Interestingly the two eldest daughters listed on the 1881 census Emma
and Alice are missing from the 1891 census. Did they die before the
1891 census was taken ? It is possible that Emma, by then aged 19 may
have married although Alice would have been only 17. Given the fact
that Edward's wife was only 22 in 1881, the ages of the daughters is
suspect.
xii) Edward's elder brother Noah Chant was still unmarried at Acreman
St Sherborne, living with his unmarried sister Elizabeth Chant.
On the 1901 census:
xiii) I have been unable to positively locate any of Edward Chant's
family on the 1901 census. Did they migrate ? Any help in this matter
would be great.
xiv) It does not seem like Noah Chant nor his sister Elizabeth Chant
make an appearance on the 1901 census. Did Noah die between 1891 and
1901 ?
xv) As John Chant pointed out in an earlier posting Frank Chant, son of
Wilfred Chant: 1838-1869, grandson of Noah Chant: 1811-1870 is listed
on the 1901 census at Battersea, London
-Frank Chant: 36 born Sherborne: Railway Engine Driver
-Florence Chant: 37 born Torquay, Devon
-Ernest Chant: 10 born Twickenham, Middlesex
-Frank Chant: 8 born Twickenham
-William Chant: 6 born Lambeth, London
-Gladys Chant: 2 born Battersea
-Florence Chant; 6 months born Battersea
As John Chant pointed out, he believes that Frank Chant married
Florence Agnes Hatton at Brentford Sep Qtr 1890
I do not at present have access to the 1891 Middlesex returns, however
judging by the births of Frank's two eldest children, that is where the
family lived at the time.
Any information on Frank's family in London would be appreciated.
xvi) Michael Cheeseman has recently stated that he has a burial for
Sarah Ann Chant 4th August 1909 aged 47 of Trendle St, Sherborne.
Clearly this is the wife of Wilfred Henry Chant, grandson of Noah
Chant: 1811-1870. So it is to be presumed that Wilfred marriaed second
wife Gertrude ? between 1909 and their departure for New York during
1911
xvii) Michael also found baptism for Reginald Frank Chant 25th Sep 1889
of Castleton, Sherborne. As stated in previous posting he is listed on
the 1891 census aged 1 at Sherborne with his family, however he is
listed as Donald F Chant aged 11 on the 1901 census. Could the 1901
census be a transcription error ? If so what became of Reginald/Donald.
He would have been about 20 ish at the death of his mother during
1909. He does not appear to have migrated to the USA, as did his
brother and father. Any info o Regnald/Donald would be great.
Looking forward to replies.
Regards,
Sean
