Hello Michael,
In my notes on Bert Chant there is a suggestion that he did in fact
travel with his father to WA, however later returned to NSW to live
with his uncle William. Does this tally with your take on the family ?
I know that there exists correspondence between Percy Chant, Bert's
brother and the Dubbo mob.
Whether or not John Chant travelled with his uncles Richard and Luke
to WA in 1896 remains unknown still. Certainly there appears to be no
contact at between the two families after 1896, suggesting they were
separate ventures.
I have no great problem with the "reply to address". Just thought I
would mention it as it does not occur with other Lists. However
funnily enough it worked well on this occasion.
Regards,
Sean

Sorry Sean
Mixed up Linda's great grandfather with 2x great grandfather.
I already had photocopies of Noel Mudford's book back in 1992 or
earlier but copy's were poor, hence why I asked you for copy in 99?
Was that eight years ago? Time sure does fly. I asked you for a copy
as I was hoping for better quality copy on the photo images as mine
were not great regards the photo's though the print was very readable.
Numerious Mudford researchers in 93/95 were in contact with me and
well
aware of connection back to West Chinnock lines.
I got my copies originally from a Dubbo resident Bateup researcher
cousin to William Chant and Catherine McDonald's youngest son
James Ernest Alexander Chant b 1884 who married Elsie Bateup.
As Bertie Chant my great grandmother Alice Chant's brother stayed with
William and Catherine's family when Richard and Luke Chant headed West
to meet up with the Bunter cousins here and came west with George's
son
John Chant b 1871-1932 brother of your wife's great grandfather James
Chant 1864-1909. Even though my 3x great grandfather Luke Chant
returned to
Dubbo
from WA about 1910 with his brother Richard's son Percy (another elder
brother
of my great grandmother Alice) and lived with brother brother
Robert Chant
1862-1940 who
had married Martha Mudford and lived at Maquarie View. I'm sure
Richard and
Margaret
must have keep in touch with his son Bert by letter even though
living with
William
and Catherine in Dubbo.
The reply option is something I cannot fix and it's easy enough for
people
to check
the address for anyone replying before they send instead of just
assuming
reply's are sent back to the list.
I know it's one of the issues that got John in a tissy but it's not
a big
issue
and as I said I cannot fix it. I dont know why it's happening and just
sometimes
or just for this list?>. Nothing is different from everyone elses
settings
on the
list that I can see, though some assumed that was the case.
regards
Michael

Hello Michael,
Of course the link you mention has been known for some time. Indeed
it has been discussed on the List at length in the past. You will
recall it was I who sent you pages from Noel Mudford's excellent book
some 8 years ago. In fact it was Noel's work which got me interested
in this caper in the first place. However I will point out as I said
in my previous message some researchers are not keen to outline their
work via the net. I do know of some excellent and insightful work
being done, which I am not at liberty to tell here.
As you will be aware Michael, James Chant: 1864-1909 was in fact
Linda's great-grandfather and not 2 x as you stated in your previous
message.
Just wanted to point also that there are still problems with replying
to your messages on the List, they automatically return to your home
address as opposed to CHANT@rootsweb, not even in the cc box.
Regards,
Sean
