Hello Michael,
In my notes on Bert Chant there is a suggestion that he did in fact
travel with his father to WA, however later returned to NSW to live
with his uncle William. Does this tally with your take on the family ?
I know that there exists correspondence between Percy Chant, Bert's
brother and the Dubbo mob.
Whether or not John Chant travelled with his uncles Richard and Luke
to WA in 1896 remains unknown still. Certainly there appears to be no
contact at between the two families after 1896, suggesting they were
separate ventures.
I have no great problem with the "reply to address". Just thought I
would mention it as it does not occur with other Lists. However
funnily enough it worked well on this occasion.
Regards,
Sean

I have nothing conclusive either way for John or Bertie. What correspondence
exists between
Percy and uncle William Chant's lot? Can I get a copy please.
John Chant does appear in the WA Government Railways records a bit after 6
months
after his uncles Luke and Richard suggesting he may have joined them to go
west. Possibly
they visited their brother George Chant at Jellore to say their goodbye's
before heading
west and George's son John decided to go with his uncles? Possibly the
family also visited
Albury as well to say good to Samuel, Anne and Elizabeth. Richard's son
James then
deciding to stay with Aunt Anne rather than go West? Maybe uncle Issac Manns
as a teacher
could see potential for his brother-in-law Richard Chant's son James to have
a better education
or do a apprenticeship.
It's interesting that Richard's son James became a Engineer train driver and
Luke Chant
had been a Sleeper Cutter in NSW cutting logs for train sleepers. Suggests
Railway jobs may have been a motivator to head west.
It's been suggested 1 in 3 men in WA worked for the WAGR c 1890-1910
A number of WA connected family were railway men as well as rural
labourers/farmers.
My Cheeseman great grandfather included and 2x great grandfather
Oldfield -1st Fleeter descendant
worked on the railways as did a number of others in the family including
O'Malley's, Arthur Chant,
Eastough's etc etc.
regards
Michael Cheeseman
