Hello Sherron
I believe the Dorset and Somerset Family History Society is based in
Sherborne.
Not sure their opening times. The Sherborne Muesum and local library might
be useful
for Holwell info. Again you would need to check for opening times/days.
You might check with Dorset local councils website to see if Holwell has a
vicar
to discuss church records with. A Local vicar might be able to point out a
local historian
knowledgable about history issues of Holwell or similarly for Yeovil.
Obviously the Dorset
Records Office in Dorchestor would be an important place to visit.
I gather written local histories of Yeovil and Holwell have been looked into
already? Also various
Census entries before 1873 for this line of Chant family?
Of course James Chant and Harriett Minterne married at Sherborne and son
John Chant b 1840 born
at Sherborne. So assume researcher might visit Sherborne for that reason.
Pass on my best wishes to your fellow Holwell/Yeovil/MN researchers. Would
love to read the book
when completed.
Busy currently exploring for info for Edward Chant son of Noah Chant b 1811.
Edward ended up in Bedfordshire but
son David Chant and daughter's Alice and Emma ended up in Middlesex/London.
Trying to track down
living family.
Edward's nephew's Wilfred Chant, Frank Chant, Robert Chant etc and cousin
Mahala Coles and Andrew Chant of Oborne
lines being looked into.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Fellow listers:
A Chant researcher who is writing a book about Elizabeth Chant (b. 10 Mar
1865 Holwell, d. 21 Sep 1947, Wilmington, NC) dau of James Chant and
Elizabeth Rowe Wills
(m. 1864: June Qtr Yeovil District 5c 889) is visiting the Yoevil area in
mid-October. She would like to visit areas if interest. Would any Chant
listers familiar with the Yoevil and/or Holwell area be able to give me
further information--or forward this note? I am particularly interested in
names of folks I should contact and any details about the below locations
and Historical Society Offices.
The 1881 census had Elizabeth's brother located at:
Edward and Mary Wills
34 Sherborne Rd
Yeovil, Somerset, England
James grandmother was living at:
Thomas & Charlotte Chant Hayward
Hill Street Farm
Holwell
As always, Thanks for your help!
