Hello June
Your friend descends from Ann Mudford daughter of Samuel
is fine and matches what I have for Ann and Samuel. I have
Samuel as the son of William and Mary Mudford the same.
I have concern that this is not confirmed with Samuel Mudford's
baptism indicating parents were William and Mary. Now a Mary
Chant did marry William Mudford. But who were her parents. It
was assumed Robert Chant and Elizabeth but as we go further
back and with other Chant families in the region with daughters
named Mary can we be certain?
The Marriage at Chiselborough in 1750 between a Robert Chant
and Elizabeth Davis if correct and acurate will cause many
on the Chant list to rethink whole family lines. Based on
baptisms of Children Of Robert and Elizabeth from 1738 in
West Chinnock and Robert and Susannah in Stoke sub Hamden.
We have two possible things occurring. Robert b1725 West
Chinnock married Susannah Tett. Robert Bn 1719 in Stoke
Sub Hamden married Elizabeth ? in 1737.
or Robert b 1719 married Susannah Tett and Robert b 1725
married Elizabeth Davis.
Either the first is correct and Elizabeth Davis was a first
wife to Robert b 1725 and Susannah a second wife. But this
does not explain children in West Chinnock for a Robert
from 1738-46.
or the second is correct but in either case I think it
suggests a third Robert Chant lived in the area or can
anyone suggest other options. One I am thinking about
is:
Maybe Robert of Stoke b 1719 married an Elizabeth circa 1737
in West Chinnock and had children 1738-1746. Then Elizabeth
died and he remarried Susannah Tett in 1760 at Stoke?
Then Robert b 1725 married Elizabeth Davis 1750 at Chiselborough
would match. This would cause many to rethink which Chant family
they descend from.
or that there was a third young Robert Chant (not Robert b 1700)
in the area which is highly likely. As Odcombe Males lines
from 1508 and Stoke male Chants from 1587 are missing info on
descendants means the likelyhood of many other Chant family lines
is highly likely. These are possibly the Lines that later appear
in Henstringe, Sherborne, Yeovil, Hampshire etc.
Maybe list member John Chant knows from David Chant who has
researched the West Chinnock line for 48 years if Robert
b 1725 married Elizabeth Davis with any confidence? You
have thrown the cat amoungst the pigeons with this one June.
