Hello Linda
I am unsure at present that you have established the right
connection with the West Chinnock family if one exists and
are in fact jumping the gun a little.
By 1800 Chant was spread throughout, Somerset, Wiltshire
and Dorset. Families had crossed back and forth across
borders more than once. This means connecting to any
particular family without some clue is likely to have
you following the wrong tree.
You mention 2 children who were bap. Taunton
St James - William Charles in 1867, Emma Jane in 1875
(born 1870).
Albert Thomas about 1876. Albert Thomas CHANT and Lilian
Charlotte STACEY They married 1 August 1898 The Parish
Church of Taunton St James. (on Albert's marriage cert.
his father was William Charles CHANT, occ Mason)
You lack some very important info.
1) Albert's Birth and baptism are required confirming he
is related to Jane and a sibling to William and Emma and
the son of William Charles Chant. Without this you could
get the wrong family as these names were in common use
and Chant was common in Somerset by the 1850's.
2) The 1871 Census entry likely at the same addresses as
on the 1867 and 1870 birth certificates for siblings
which you should purchase. This census entry would give
you the father as head of the household William Charles
Chant place of residence, age and importantly parish of
Birth. Also if Albert's mother was Jane or was known by
another name and Jane was a middle or a pet name possibly
even a stepmother?. Often middle or pet names may appear
in one document but show the true first name in others.
3) The marriage Certificate of William and Jane which will
list fathers of bride and Groom.
4) With William Charles Chant's Marriage certificate you
can then crossmatch the approximate age and Fathers name
with baptisms in the Parish listed in the 1871 Census
record.
It is Prudent to follow the family through the 1861, 1851
and 1841 census records. Sometimes info in the Census is
not supported in others. Our ancestors told lies at times
or the enumerator writing it down put down what he thought
he heard rather than what was actually said.
Be careful not to assume our ancestors did not move around much
either because they more often then not, did move from place to
place for work, and visiting numerious friends and extended
family links. People got out more without television. Travelling
40 miles in a day on foot is not unheard of.
In The Past families had closer links to second and sometimes
third cousins (extended family) unlike today with single parent
households and lack of contact between grown children and
siblings/parents in our fast paced societies.
My suggestion is get those birth certificates for siblings
William 1867 and Emma 1870. Also check the 1871 Census at
their home address. Then maybe you will know if a link exists
with one of the Chant families at West Chinnock or Oborne or
Henstringe or Sherborne or Bradford Abbass or Stoke sub Hamden
or Martock or Somerton or East Chinnock etc etc.

Subject: [CHANT] CHANT's in West Chinnock
Hello CHANT listers,
I wonder if some kind Chant researcher of 'Chants in West Chinnock' can send
me a Gedcom (or any other kind) report of their family tree, as I have just
returned from the SRO with lots of Chants's Baptised, Married and Buried in
West Chinnock and I am trying to make some sense of the info I have.
My connection is from James bap. 1774 married Mary Mudford 1795, child
George CHANT bap. 1803 married Ann Hallett 1824, child William Charles CHANT
bap. 3 July 1831 married JANE ? found 2 children who were bap. Taunton St
James - William Charles in 1867, Emma Jane in 1875 (born 1870) but still
could not locate their next child Albert Thomas abt 1876. He married in
Taunton St James Parish Church 22 years later, so perhaps I missed him.
Kind Regards
