G'Day Listers
It seems I have annoyed people when sticking to an
agreement on a book on the research on the Chant's
of Sherborne with another researcher. At times I may
have been gruff with some people about my branch of
Chant's and for that I am sorry. The joint effort
has slowly drifted away from the original agreement
and is now obvious to me to now being seperate
research efforts.
Some of my cousin here in Australia have given me flack
for it too, why aren't we working together, why arent we
sharing info between us fully. I dont know, I give up on
that one and will move on.
It seems while I was supposed to keep quiet on the family
research until a book jointly researched was completed
my fellow researcher could pick and choose what info to
hand out and look like a nice person. Many then getting
an impression I just take and not give. Well I started
researching in 1979 and have learned a lot about my
Chant family. Some of my early research is floating
around now because I have in the past given info over
freely with others or because access to Dorset records
has become easier. The Dorset OPC project getting off the
ground a year after I started the Dorset Parish Transcriptions
Website.
Those that joined this list early in 99 will know I have
shared heaps of Chant info I had with others and pointed
out where I saw many family connections. Sometimes making
an effort to add branches to lines where I could.
This list has had some 120 members currently around 65.
Many who have left still keep in touch which is nice.
Some who have left were not happy to see that their
research efforts which probably cost a lot of money to
compile had somehow become common knowledge from people
they had shared it with in confidence.
I can understand that point of view. Information especially
before Microfiche readers, indexes, Webpages and the like was
extremely expensive to extract. Usually if you were too distant
from record sources it required a pro reearcher to do your
searching of record sources for you. Try doing that with all
the info you have. Make sure you have thousands of dollars to
spare on it first. Thanks to many, many volunteers who
tirelessly spent years creating indexes to many various sources
and now with the ease of the internet via webpages and email we
can gain heaps as long as someone else puts the information onto
the public sources first.
Their are thousands of people who have helped me with info
over the years. From Pro researchers, local historians, archivists,
Family researchers experienced and new to research, not to be forgotten
the many many cousins in my family lines.
I will detail my lines in the next email.

Michael Cheeseman
